Hello all,

I have inherited an old mosin from my grandfather. Stock and all is in good condition, but the end of the barrel is hurtin, very rusted and pitted about 5-7" into the bore. The rifle doesn't have much sentimental value compared to the other rifles I inherited, so I'd like to cut the barrel back to around 24" ( or wherever I don't experience a rusted bore).

I would like to preserve iron sights rather than a long eye relief scope or reddot. From my research there are two options for "do it yourself" front sight replacement:

1. A barrel band from brass stackers that has a built in dovetail that will accept the existing front sight. This seems like the easiest option but I can't seem to find a dealer in Canada that has anything similar. Any recommendations on this front?

2. Silver solder a front sight ramp with a dovetail. There is more involved here but I think I could do it myself.

So in conclusion, is there anything in Canada similar to the brass stacker barrel band? Have I missed any other easy options?

Thanks.

To counter bore the rifle would I not need a lathe? The rifle definitely is not a m28, but it would be pretty sweet if it was. Needless to say my grandfather is a good 10 hour drive away, and is not good with computers, so no pictures for a while. If I recall it was a Tula 41 or 42. I was hoping this would be a short project my grandfather and I could complete together.

Have you shot the rifle? These things can surprise you with how accurate they can be even with a crappy bore.

Fair enough. I haven't shot the rifle yet. I just want to explore all options before I decide to cut it down or not. A range session beforehand is a good point.
