Hello,

Can anyone give me any good links as to the history of this specific rifle? What usual condition are they found in? What bore diameter can I expect in these rifles, as in, the varience?
I've heard from .3095 to .315, but usually .311 in decent bores.
I have also heard about people "trimming" the bolt srping to increase the smoothness of the action, as well as make the safety easier to operate. Is there truth in this, if so, how can one properly do it? Links much appreciated.
Also, I have heard alot of these (M-38's) have bad trigger pulls, many people call it "sloppy". Can someone please explain this to me? If so, how do I correct it?

Thanks for your time and input,

Yours,
Drachenblut

General condition is just like any other Mosin - all over the map. One of my in laws has one from milarm that had apparently never seen a refurbish - it's all blued and has a nice blond birch stock - while mine had the full arsenal treatment complete with BBQ paint and a 1/3" coating of shellac.
Bore diameter is the same. *shrug* if you can hand pick that's great. I've never heard of anyone slugging a bore at the shop but it never hurts to ask right? =D
If you trim your bolt spring you are reducing the force available to the firing pin. Setting the safety is something most avoid by chambering a round when they need it. Or you can man up and build the callouses. =P
Sloppy trigger pull? Every Mosin I've ever handled had a long heavy pull. I think I read in here that 7lbs was the average. There are trigger kits out there, but you'll never get match grade.
The Mosin Nagant M38 is the same as every other Mosin Nagant rifle. Fairly crude and quite effective. I bought mine to have behind the seat of my truck. If it gets dinged - out comes the black paint and good as new.
If you want a rifle that is pretty, smooth functioning, has a nice crisp bore and an easy safety - Marstar has a deal on BO Mausers.

I have a m44, nice little gun, can gruop with it at 110 yards, all on paper, which for me is an , well at least i hit it, and with my old eyes. Feels like your shooting a rifle with its kick, fun little carbine.

Here's a link I got off another CGN'er awhile ago, which part of which covers trimming the bolt spring :

As for trigger pull, I guess it depends on what you mean by 'sloppy'. I have a good 50 pound pull on mine. I'm exaggerating of course, but you get the idea. That can be fixed by a fairly quick and easy shim job :

you can go like the mach 1 suggested to 7.62x54R.net best place I've used for info yet, or theres a book out that would be of some help The Mosin Nagent by North Cape Publishing.

7.62x54r.net is by far the best mosin nagant site on the net
excellent for identifying make and origins of surplus ammo

took me about a week solid to browse through
