this is what I did. I know after I cut the mount, it didn't look as nice as before but its holding on strong. let me know what you guys think.

somewhat creative however the 3/8" dovetail that you refer is actually tapered. So you will find that your mount will actually creep forward on repeated recoil. there is one mount available very inexpensively that allows for the taper. I would however suggest something a bit more secure such as an S&K scout mount for the mosin.
I think you will notice your "rail" sliding away on you using your mount, no matter how tight you try to secure it.

Congrats on your inventiveness !!!

Let us know how it holds up after firing.

I went a different route and purchased an S&K mount and all you do is remove the pin holding the front of the rear sight blade and install the mount there.

I'm going to try and drill a very small hole so that the securing screw has sks thug to sit in. Hopefully that will hold it into place. Thanks for the heads up though. And I will let you knows know how it goes after I fire a few rounds through it

I've wanted to do the same thing. Let us know how the scope holds up after a couple of hundred rounds. Looks good.

I am particularly interested in how that scope holds up. I was looking at the same one yesterday on Amazon, and for the same purpose.

Also thats a nice mount you have, all the ones I see on Amazon only have two screws to pinch the dovetail, while that one has 3.

I was asking about this sort of thing the other day, and someone said they used a UTG dovetail mount with rings on it, and after drilling a small recess for a set screw to go down into, has held zero for hundreds of rounds...

My only problem with this method is its 1" rings, while that scope you just got is 30mm, so I'd have to find a different scope.

The scope that I bought came with the rings, it's actually a good package. So I'm not sure if your looking for a scope. But ya, I will keep you all posted on how it works. I'm not sure when I'll have the chance to test it out.

That's what I'm talking about! Being new at this all these endless optics/rail combos make my head spin lol so I like how simple your setup looks. I wanna challenge myself with the iron sights first but I'll be buying a 2nd Mosin down the road, to customize a bit.

I don't have a scope yet. I was planning on buying the one you have have, then I saw the mount with rings for so cheap I thought maybe i should get a different scope, but I guess I just need to get a rail. How long is the dovetail on the rifle anyways?

I think is was only 3 inches long, that's why I had to cut down the mount. I'll try to find a measuring tape tomorrow and I'll let you know

I was in the exact same boat as you, that's why I figured I'd make the video and post it once I figured out a good set up.

I tried the dovetail thing, I tried the scout mount and now have finally gone ahead and had the ati scope mount installed by gunsmith and topped it with a 4-12x40 bushnell xlt. I have not tried it at the range yet but im sure I wont be disappointed this time

perfect! I was going to order a mount but I need to figure out what my best option is. The mounts on amazon all seem to have only 2 screws clamping it to the dovetail, whereas the one you've got is 3 screws which seems like a better option so I think I might have to go to a real store and see what they have...
