Mosin Nagant question

I was looking at the P&S page interested in a nagant what does counterbored mean?

That means the muzzle wear required them to drill into the muzzle a short distance to fix the crown, rather than shorten the barrel which has the sights on the end.

They counterbore about 1" AFAIK. Those are pretty worn rifles by my standards.
