Hello All,

Recently grabbed a Mosin Sniper PU and some PPU match 7.62x54r and was severely disappointed with the accuracy at 100 yards and the chronograph readings were equally disappointing.

Over 30 rounds I had a velocity range of 120fps.

I just bought a couple of boxes of Hornady 174 grain FMJBT and have some Dominion primers (and some FGMM if required) as well as some H4895 or Varget/H4350 if required.

I was wondering what kinds of readings you guys are getting, groups and any favourite loads

I was equally disappointed by PPU back in the days when I had a PU Sniper. That ammo really became a source of brass to reload for me. However, .312 Hornady BTHP over H4895 was a pretty good combo, I was getting consistent 1"-1.5" 5-shot groups at 100 yards after some load development.

I had similar results with Varget in Lapua brass for a generic Mosin.

When I had mine I had a great load using PPU brass, WLR primer, Varget and 150gr Sierra Prohunter bullets. Some groups were sun MOA and typically 1"- 1 1/4" @ 100yds. I got some 180gr to try but never got them loaded before I sold the rifle.

The sniper I had had a tight enough bore I could use .308 bullets and could print consistent inch and a half groups with my load development. That was over 4895 and Prvi brass with Barnes match burners.

My current formula for x54r for my PPU sniper is:

- PPU brass
- 303 (*.311)150 grain FMJBT bullet (PPU)
- 54.5 gn of BL-C(2)
- WLR primer
- 2.800" COL with PPU bullets

I can generally do about 2 MOA with this load but it could probably do better in the hands of a better shooter.

What's the muzzle velocity you are getting from this load? I'm thinking of trying that powder as well..

I'm hoping my sniper starts shooting better as the group's through the Ppu match were atrocious.

Mine is a 43 tula with a 40 PU scope. Looks like an early Molot as it had the scopes serial number at the side of the rifle.

I use varget pushing hornady 150gr sp in ppu case. About 1.5 moa from my repord PU and no significant group size change through out the load ladder. So I accepted it as the limit of my rifle. Seems others have been getting similar results.

Yes, my standard Mosin prints at most 1.5 MOA at 100yds with my Finn-inspired load. I get cloverleafs of 5 shots on occasion, but most of the time it's 1.25-1.5 MOA.

If you have a bad muzzle crown or a worn over size bore the last thing I would be shooting are boat tail bullets.

Check your rifles crown, if it is not perfect the gas flow pushing on the boat tail as the bullet exits the barrel causes the bullet to tip.

And a flat base bullet will expand and fill the bore when fired and kicked in the seat of the pants. In my worn Enfield .303 rifles I got the best accuracy with the Hornady 174 grain round nose bullets. I assume this was because of the larger bullet surface contacting the bore.

Use some foam bore cleaner and see if you can remove any copper. Below one shot of foam bore cleaner left in the bore over night in a 1943 No.4 Enfield.

Below a AR15 carbine and foam bore cleaner, the foam removes the carbon and copper without any scrubbing with a bore brush.
