I have a M44 (refurb). I shoot Hungarian heavy ball. When I extract, the bolt is stiff. The cases don't look swollen, but they don't go back if the bore nicely, so I'm guessing they are. Here's the thing: heavy ball was designed for machine guns right? I've been told it's loaded hotter than normal "light" ball. Is this why I have some swelling, or is it a significant headspace issue? Should I keep shooting, or ?

Hi, check out you tube, there is a vid on your problem, the guy shows how to polish the chamber etc, so you won't have that problem,m takes about 15 mins to do.

Sometimes I bring a piece of 2x4 with me to the range. ;)

Steel cases don't have the elasticity of brass, so won't always shrink back enough. Plus, the bolt handle on the M44 gives you very little leverage for sticky cases.

With Mosins, it helps a lot if you work the bolt with your thumb against the left side of the reciever to act as a lever. Works a lot better than just grabbing the stubby bolt knob. Chamber polishing couldn't hurt at all either.
