Considering the big price difference between the 2, whats the big difference between them?

Is a scope and scope mount worth the 400 or 500 dollar difference?
Can a guy simply buy a mount + scope and put it on a non sniper version and get the same results?
Or are the "sniper" rifles higher quality or accuracy type of idea?

I'm assuming since he says the $400-$500 price difference he means repros.

Essentially the price difference from plane jane to repro is the cost of extra materials and labour to properly modify the gun.

Keep in mind, putting a correct repro scope increases value, while adding an incorrect scope/mount assembly with permanent modifications decreases value.

By and large the original mosin snipers were hand picked overly accurate guns. They may still be that way, or they may have been "de-sniperized" because they were worn out. Some may have just been surplus to needs and returned to regular condition.

Generally if you're making a mosin repro sniper yourself you will want to shoot some mosins until you find an extra accurate one then build off that.

I was just going by the 200-300$ range for non snipers, and 700$ mark for snipers.

I have been interested in them, from what I was hearing they were pretty accurate and had good range, so my thought was getting one for under $300 I could have a target shooting kinda rifle that could also double as a hunting rifle without breaking my student sized bank.

What are repo non snipers worth? How about original non snipers?

"Essentially the price difference from plane jane to repro is the cost of extra materials and labour to properly modify the gun."
So repro's are worth more?

Which would be more accurate usually, repro or non?

Im dont realy know too much about them tbh, what are the different model names a real vs a repro?

The Snipers are essentially the same as regular ones but they handpicked the most accurate rifles.

There are several steps to the conversion:

1. Buy a mount and scope (repro ones are cheaper but there are real ones available, just more expensive, repro ones are often junk), ebay $300 US for real ones out of storage

2. Cut out the wood were the mount will attach and drill and tap (drilling is actually not that easy, proper location of the holes, you also need a press drill)

3. You need to bend the bolt or buy a bend one, hard to find, will set you back $70 to $120 if you want it to look good

You wouldn't be able to nail anything together for under $300 I don't think... The rifle is gonna cost you $169.00 or more before tax & shipping depending on where it comes from. I can't remember ever seeing ANY centerfire optic/mount options for that kind of cash - and you still need to mount everything.

The folks putting the repros together have saved you the leg work, importing costs/taxes etc and the time involved in putting the finished product together.

Hunting. Yah. A pain in close bush, heavy on long walks, and not the quickest rifle to brig to point. And heavy. Did I mention it's heavy?;) Not a bad rifle in a tree stand tho.

Not sure I get that part...?

A plain mosin will cost you approx $200+/- to your door. An EX sniper $275-$375 + .

$700 will get you a REPRO sniper.

An original sniper with it's matched mount will be ++++++++$

If you're talking buying a plain 91/30, you could get one for say, $175 to your door off the EE and be doing ok. If you bought an ok scope and a rear sight NO GUNSMITHING OR ALTERATIONS mount that would probably run you another $150.

Keep in mind that if you mount a gunsmithing required mount that isn't a period correct PU or PE scope, your assembled gun with modifications/optics will be worth in the range of $150-$200, or the value of the scope and mounts if they're worth more. Lots of people have sunk hundreds into making their dream milsurp, only to find out people won't even give them the value of the parts (because they're no longer new), nevermind the cost of modifications.

Don't get it......... if you mean a repro sniper made from a gun that was never a sniper, $700. An original 91/30 that was never a sniper is worth... $200.

"Essentially the price difference from plane jane to repro is the cost of extra materials and labour to properly modify the gun."

More than non-repro snipers.... because a plain 91/30 doesn't have $300 worth of optics and $200 worth of work and taxes sunk into it.

impossible to say. Depends on the gun. Generally original mosin snipers were more accurate WHEN CHOSEN AS SNIPERS. Now they might be shot out and worn out. Have to check them and decide how they look.

Different models of mosin nagant rifle, or different model names between a standard 91/30 and a sniper? If you meant the second, there is no difference in names. It's just a 91/30 with PU or PE optics.

Ok, ya answered allot of my Q's, I think I understand it better now.
I was a little confused on the repro part, but i get it now.

I think If your budget is 300 dollars maybe buy an unscoped mosin nagant with a good barrel. If you like the way it handles and how it shoots you could buy scope for it later on.

Thats what I would probably do, I will keep my eye out on the EE and see what comes and goes.
Im not in the market atm to buy one, but I figure i should do my research first.

If you want to go hunting with a Mosin Nagant, I'd suggest using a M44/M38 with a scout scope setup. The 91/30 can be long and awkward in the bush....
