Well after watching Enemy At The Gates on New Years Eve on TV (even though I have the DVD!), I was wondering what the difference was between the Mosin Nagant 1891/30 (right?) that our hero was using at the start of the movie and the sniper rifle that he was using later is. What is the model number of the sniper rifle? Or is it just a 1891/30 with a bent bolt handle and a scope on it? Tell me more!

Anyone here buy a Mosin Nagant 1891/30 or the 44 Carbine from SIR Mail Order? How do you like them?

PS - I did a search here on CGN but didn't find much to answer this. I don't think the search engine works to good.

I've got one of the 91/30's from SIR, and its OK. Cleaned up fine. Collector value is shot with the import marking crap on them. Gonna see how well cold blue hides it.

I bought one of the 91/30's from SIR but have yet to shoot out of it. It looks like S.I.R got the Mosin's from Century International Arms Inc. I find you have to be careful putting on the bayonet as it's a very tight fit and it's easy to scrape off some of the bluing. I see S.I.R carries a B-Square Mosin Nagant Scout Type mount and a Bushnell 2-6X Long eye relief scope. I was thinking of it but a higher quality scope like an Aimpoint and a mount like an S & K INSTA MOUNT might be a better way to go but for a cheap gun I'm not sure if it's worth the extra cost. Has anyone tried slugging their Mosin yet? Mine appears to be a .312 groove diameter.

ok at the start he has an m91/30 , but notice it has an octagon type reciever......an straight bolt..........made prior to ww2, ok? ( all /most finnish nagants are this type refurbished after being captured from the russkies.)
the sniper version in the flick has a round reciever , ( a war production short cut, ) and the pu scope and mount. ( 3.5 or 4 power )
the pre ww2 guns could be scoped , but an entirely diff mount an scope ( pe scope very similar to ww2 german stuff even a COPY.and a side mount. both had bent bolts but bolt handle IS longer THAN regular issue.
the sniper vasily zatzev actually USED the pe scope an mount. not the pu version. still a good movie, my lady ruined the ending when she told me the RUSSIANS WON THE WAR. lol.

The 91/30 PU was not in service at the time of the battle of Stalingrad, the Soviets were using PE or PEM models. But since the PE and PEM scoped rifles are rare and valuable, they could not get enough of them to use in the movie. The PU on the other hand is fairly common, Hollywood rarely worries about accuracy anyway. Note that the helmets used in the movie are Post-War Czech patterns also.

Sir

I got a 91/30 from SIR about 25 years ago and hunted deer and bear with it for years.

K98, thanks for the links. I knew about the Surplus Rifle .com site but not the other. Interesting that they have the <.> in 7 point 62 as that changes the name in internet addresses.

Oh. I didn't think they were still import marking rifles. Where exactly is it marked and what's the mark? Got a picture you can post of just the markings?

Nope, didn't notice the octagon receiver just the bolt. Kind of thought the handle had to be longer on the sniper with the bend in it. Will have to look harder next time and use the <PAUSE> button! So did the sniper version have a different name? Nagantsniper, got any links or books you would recommend looking at? Only scope mount that I have seen for sale is the "scout" mount that SIR Mail Order has but I would prefer something looking original and not just mounting a scope just to have one on it. No plans to hunt with it anyways.

LOL. Ya, that kinda ruins it... maybe they should have changed it in the movie... just to stir things up! ;)

Thanks for the really quick replies guys. Didn't expect that! :)

There's lot's of goof's in the movie.

"The duel with Koenig, however, is not a tall tale written by the screenwriters, but fiction invented by the Soviet propaganda machine, represented in the film by political officer Danilov (Joseph Fiennes). Even though it portrays the duel as a true story, /Enemy at the Gates/ does a passable job of showing how heroes are manufactured and legends created."

did anyone else notice they didnt have real russian accents? :)
Hehehe! No kiddin'. It's about as bad as Brad Pitt in Seven Years in Tibet.
That's Hollywood! But, even with the goofs I have to say Enemy at the Gates is still a great movie.
I just bought a Nagant 44 off of Doug. Can't wait to get my hands on this, even if it's only a Radom from 1955...

i tink i said that mmm ok. nuff said...........lol.

I got a M44 from SIR last year. Excellant rifle, but the import marks are...well...they just shouldn't be there...

So the sniper rifles used in the Stalingrad battle were either "Mosin Nagant 91/30 PE" or "Mosin Nagant 91/30 PEM"? Is that how they would be marked on the rifles?

The accents in the movie were good enough for me. I'm just happy they didn't speak Russian and have those lame sub-titles.

Well, likely not. All of the "official" designations common here (Mosin-Nagant M91/30, Mosin-Nagant M44) were never actually used by the Russian military. M91/30 PE/PEM/PU are all terms of convenience for Westerners, same as any other Mosin-Nagant designation.

I don't actually know that a Russian sniper rifle would be marked any differently from a regular infantry rifle.

Actually, if you liked Enemy at the Gates, you should see the German made movie, "Stalingrad". It is in German with English subtitles but it is excellent. Five minutes into it, you forget you are reading them. It tells a very different kind of story than EATG, but just as compelling.
