Well, I took the M44 out yesterday and I have to say that I sure like the feel. I can see it will be crucial to find some ball( Iwas told to look for the YELLOW tip stuff) as I went thru 20 really fast. The kick in mine with the 147gr. felt less than a .308 that I was lent. At fifty yards (only had one box of ammo) she was printing left +or- 8" with 5 shots in 5"or 6 inches and just a tad high. So I guess I'll drift the front sight left a bit(any advice?). The 91/30 is still in the closet. I gotta say I don't know much about the pin protrusion measuremnt with the tool kit gauge, but the 91/30 is too high to fit under. What are the risks of this. How far can you back out the pin? Or just forget about it and buy another box. I guess the after market ammo like the bell I got isn't corrosive?

Firing pin is adjustable on Mosins; look at the rear cocking knob.
Does the pin seem to be under the surface of the cocking knob? You can unscrew it one or two turns to back it out. Try to line up the screw slot with the mark on the back of the knob.
Just release part of the tension on the spring by pulling the trigger while closing the bolt, it makes things easier.
BTW, try putting bayonet on; it changes POI drastically.
PP.

Thanks Pervers. I did back out the 91/30 pin from the cocking knob but the screw seemed to be sticking out quite aways when the clearance was reached. I was worried that I might have screwed it out too far. So I haven't shot that one yet. What would happen if one was to shot the rifle with the pin not clearing the 95 mark on the gauge? Ruptured primers? I have to say I was a little nervous of the M44 the first time, but that was unfounded and the rifle turned out to be a beauty that I'm really happy about. Any tricks to front sight adjustment? The m44 was a little wide in the windage department, but the groups were pretty good. PS the one I shot is the m44 with attached bayo but not extended and thanks for the trick with the trigger to adjust the pin! Much appreciated. Pete

I gave you the protrusion on mine, how far is the pin sticking out on yours? Mine only barely taps the Bell primers and leaves a deeper hole in the LPS berdan primers. It's still set the way it was off the factory.

Firing pin

If the threaded part of the firing pin is sticking out over the cocking knob's surface, usually this would result in a smaller protrusion and difficulty of primer ignition.
Usually, firing pin protrusion is measured at the boltface with bolt out and cocking knob released to its resting "fired" position; the firing pin tip should fit inside the gauge indent with the gauge shoulders being in contact with the boltface.
Does the firing pin stick out too much out of the boltface EVEN with the firing pin backed-out?
Can you post a close-up pic of it?
pp.

check out site www.surplusrifle.com lots of how to info on nagant rifles, including adjusting nagant front sites, or such. type mosin nagant on search if i spelled site name wrong.

if you de-#### the bolt like in the photo, then look at it from the side, at a 90 degree angle, the tip of the firing pin should not stick out from the top of the bolt head rim...damn, that doesnt make much sense does it? In any case, as long as it's not puncturing the primers, and not giving light strikes, you're pretty safe. I think Mosin and Nagant subscribed to the KISS theory!

Thanks for the advice SVT, Ollie, NB, PP. I'll give it a whirl. I guess I'm sounding like a weenie. If that pin protrusion problem won't blow me or the gun up, then "Let the games begin". I'll try it like it is and then see what the strikes are like compared to the M44. Thanks and I'll let you guys know how the 91/30 shoots. Pete
