hey all,

Just curious as to the difficulty of rebarreling my m39.

I've already goggled the net and been told how rediculous/expensive/stupid/backward/whythehellwouldyoudothat etc etc it is, but thats not the point. I love this rifle, its treated me very well, but its starting to open up to unacceptable levels at the range, and am considering a rebarrel. It isn't a numbers-matching or anything exciting, as I am just as sensitive to bubba-ing as the next guy.

Again, i don't want to "buy a new one, its cheaper". Just looking for advice on how a guy would go about doing this, where to find a new barrel, tools etc. Any help would be appreciated -Cameron

The trick will be finding another barrel. Then you'd need a barrel vise with a bushing and the proper action wrench, plus headspace guages. If you don't use the proper action wrench, you will twist the receiver into an odd shaped paperweight. Paying a smithy to do it will likely cost you more than the rifle is worth.
Marstar is listing used barrels for 1891-16/M-38/M-44's at $15 each. Your M39 is an M91
Go and No-Go headspace guages can be had from Brownells at $30US each. You'll need both. They also sell B-Square barrel vises starting at $83.27US, but you'll likely have to make the bushing. Unless the chamber area of the Nagant is close to the diameters and tapers Brownell's has for other rifles at $12.95US each. You'll need one. 1.2", 1.5" and 1.125". Bushings aren't terribly hard to make. I don't have one of the rifles so I couldn't tell you for sure what bushing you'd need.
They list a 'universal' action wrench at $64.04US.
All this comes to $220.26US ($233.88Cdn ) without any shipping, duty or taxes. This is why people say to buy another one.
Epp's is listing an M38 in good condition with a matching bolt and a very good bore at $159. Or a 91/30 in Very Good condition with matching S/N, sling bayonet and cleaning kit for $189.
In case you need or want it. Add the W's.

I have never rebarreled a MN, but I have debarreled one. No particular difficulties. I do not know if MN barrels are timed - whether a barrel from one will index on a different receiver. If the replacement barrel does not index, the shoulder/shank/chamber might need to be adjusted, and this complicates the job.
