So I have a '42 mosin that I've put into the archangel stock. It shoots really well with iron sights @ 100 yards. I've been looking at all the options for mounting a scope and wondering if anyone here has had actual long term success with one?

I've looked at the scout rifle style mounts, utilizing the dovetail, and I've also looked at altering the bolt handle and using a wrap-around mount with a scope that doesn't need huge eye relief. The original stock will be untouched, I'm thinking to put most (if any) abuse on the archangel stock (it would be nice to convert it back someday when these finally become valued war relics.

Or...should I just leave it as is, get something else for long range shooting? I want to eventually get into 300 yard shooting, although I am having a lot of fun working on my technique on the 100 yard range. What do you guys think?

Your eyesight doesn't have to be that good but it does take practice & time. If you are shooting really well at 100 without a scope your eyes cant be that bad. Have you ever tried shooting your rifle at 300?

Indeed, shooting with iron sight past 100 yards was a revelation for me. I tend to agree with Desporterizer on this one.

In other news, I doubt that any "no gunsmith" mount will be satisfactory for your Mosin. There may be a few good models out there that mount on the rear sight block, but then you need to get used to shooting with a long-eye relief scope (and find a quality one for that task... one that won't desintegrate after 10 shots).

Otherwise, you're going to have to drill and tap to mount something (either on the side or the top of the receiver) and spend some more time and / or money to modify the bolt handle.

Personally, I'd try to find one which was already butchered and have fun with that one - or, try with my sniper reproduction, which already has a good scope on it, and a bent bolt handle :)

I have to say, that Archangel stock intreagues me.

I recently put a Brass stacker mount on one of my Mosins with a cheap NCstar long eye relief scope. Scope has held up to 100 rounds perfectly so far. Brass stacker is easy to install and you can still use iron sights.

I can't exactly say I'm shooting "well" at 100 yards, I can hit a tennis ball, and to be honest, no I haven't tried shooting at the 300 yard range yet...

It went sort of like this:
-Wow I can't hit anything, I've really gotten worse since I was a kid.
-Hmm, maybe I just wasn't that good as a kid either.
-Maybe I'm not as bad as I think, maybe I just need to slow down and work on trigger pull and breathing.
-Wow, I can actually shoot really well with a scope, and I can see what I'm hitting without using a spotting scope.
-I think I'd like to start doing groupings at 300 yards, but wow the targets are nothing but a white speck and that's a long walk...

that's about how far I've gotten. I've been to the 300 yard range a few times, and there's always these guys that bring 5 rounds to the range, and take all day shooting, and they're not always the same guys! I think I'm sort of over my whole "let's put 500 round through the AR today" (well maybe not entirely), and sort of on to the "I wonder if in another life I could have been a sniper". My eyes are not bad, they said last year I don't need glasses yet, but the targets are so damn small :) I really like putting the crosshairs on something and seeing a "hit".

The band mount goes completely around the barrel under the stock, and does a lot to bind the scope mount to the firearm, as you are right and most mounts get shaken to pieces in 5 or 6 shots (and a lot of scopes too).

The Archangel stock is fantastic. However, my buddy and I bought 2 mosins at the same time, both got the archangel stock, and his doesn't like the free floating barrel setup and mine does, it's weird...

I'm looking at the Jmeck scope mounts http://www.jmeckscopemounts.com/ only because the recoil of the 7.62x 54r is pretty intense. I think even with ultra threadlocker that even the strongest bolts are going to jar loose, although the ones on your mount look fairly beefy...
