I've been bitten by the 7.62x54r bug, with my SVT-40 and all, and now I'm thinking about buying a mosin sniper and reloading for it. What are my options for scope mounts and can I use modern/brand name scopes with it?

There were some snipers with authentic scopes and mounts on EE, if that's your thing. For repros check corwin and westrifle.

Be warned though, scopes are state of the art 40s tech, in other words horrible.

I'm sure I saw a setup on e bay that was a new style scope mount with picatiny rail and the beauty of it was it mounted to the pu scope base that is on the mosin sniper so no modifications were neesasary

Rather than authentic was thinking a mount that allows me to use modern rings and put a nice vortex/Leopold scope on it for hunting next year.

Ah, plenty of those online in US. Full length and scout.

Mosins have high cheeckwield, so you will suffer with modern scope on mosin. And mosin snipers cost more than used remmy or howa, which are inherently more accurate and ergonomic for hunting.

just my 2c.

Wasn’t it westrifle that had those, I know I’ve seen them as well. Pretty sure I’ve seen a modern version somewhere as well that had 1” rings that separated allowing you to install a modern scope.

you may order original side mount for an original scope or, you may go for a modern side mount, which is the same as original in its mechanics, except, it will accomodate modern scopes:

Make sure you find a real bolt handle or at least ask somebody to weld it for you. crazy screw in kits are just crazy

Scout mounts and similar crap just make your rifle and you look strange

I also have a classic one, but those Mosin snipers imported into Canada DO NOT HAVE an original scope of its issued time. Yes scope and mounts may be original, but not from 1940s or whatever. They are mainly 1990 scopes and mounts :(

WRONG!! They most certainly do have original scopes and mounts in Canada . Do some research, yours looks a modern reproduction scope for sure, can't tell if the mount is as well from one pic.

u r wrong!
yes you may find real scopes.. maybe... from private sails... and even that is not guaranteed, but try to find original scopes from retailers

yes you may find mounts and scopes, which look like they were made ins, but they are not... so those cannot be considered ORIGINAL, but rather a late manufactured and if we are talking an original Mosin sniper, those mounts/ scopes are rather repro

To OP. You won't need original sniper if you want to have modern mount. Original PU snipers (with original mounts and original optics) are very common in Canada but will set you off close to 1k. You might want to look to ex-sniper, cheaper but harder to find 'cause most ppl don't bother to learn or don't care about their $200 rifles.

As it was said above whole project only makes sense if you have obsession to make it happen in 7.62x54r, for utilitarian purposes there are modern platforms that would give you better results for less money and less time spent.

You really have no idea of what your talking about, I was just in my local Canadian tire a while back and they had many original Mosin snipers.. and yes real 1940's scopes.
