I took 2 new to me Mosins out today. A 1943 Izzy M38 and a 1928 Izzy 91/30.

Both had sticky bolt that progressed as rounds were fired.

I had to put the M38 down for the day because of it was so stubbourn.

Then I did a risky thing, I used the M38 bolt in the 91/30.....

The 91/30 cycled better, smoother....nicer.

Risky because of headspace concerns mainly, but I fired it first very cautiously, from a distance.
15 rounds later and it was still operating smooth and fast.

I didn't try the 91/30 bolt in the M38 though, because I had already prepped that for cleaning. Lol.
But the M38 bolt always felt rough in the M38. Dry cycling it with the 91/30 bolt tonight feels much improved.

Guess I was fed up, so just went for it. Dumb I guess. But it worked, and now I have two guns that will just use each others bolt now?!

My 1928 ex dragoon out in the sun today.

Try taking a .410 brush on the end of a cordless drill and spin it in the chamber a few times to alleviate the sticky bolt problem. Some varnish coated ammo causes this problem quickly as well.

Nice looking rifle.

If you want to see something spectacular, shoot that m38 with PRVI rounds at dusk or full dark. Mine looks like a flamethrower.

Nice dragoon you have there, one to take care of and pass on to future generations. How did they shoot by the way? Was the '28 accurate?

The 28 is actually nicely sighted in from what I can tell and it shot straight,(when I shot straight). Only needed to adjust your aiming height from 25, 75, 100+ etc.

Yeah she's Purdy. I thought my other 1927 Dragoon had nice machining on the receiver, but this one is really impressive. Add in the nice bore and rifling, this is some rifle. Quite a bit heavier than my 27. Must be difference in wood type?

I'd give it a thorough cleaning as mentioned, that may just do the trick for you. And that is nice wood on it too, Congrats on a nice rifle.

Forgive the ignorance but how can it be a 1928 91/30? Doesnt the 30 part denote it was the "improved" 1930 version? I don't know much about mosins.

1891 was the date of adoption. 1930 was when they were updated with the addition of the interuptor, mag floor spring and stripper clip.

My rifle is a 1928 ex Dragoon that was converted to 91/30 specs at arsenal, as all Dragoons were.
I still need to check the date under the tang to see what year the receiver is though.
I also have a 1927 ex Dragoon and it has a 1918 date on the tang.
