I have a Mosin carbine variant with a hex receiver that I picked up for cheap and I am not confident it is 7.62x54R due to the opening clearances at the end of the barrel around the bullet.

-There is a photo below with the rifle next to a standard Russian 91 30 comparing the fit of a 7.62x54R round at the end of the barrel.
-The 7.62x54 cartridge seems to fit properly in the chamber, magazine etc.
-It has what appears to be a Swedish Mauser stock with a number disc that indicates 6.5 caliber. The stock has clearly been significantly modified to fit the mosin receiver with shims glued in etc. A 6.5x55 cartridge doesn't fit in the chamber of the rifle.
-The barrel seems too small to me for a 7.62 bullet, has anyone heard of a mosin variant that uses rounds with smaller caliber and a casing similar to the 7.62x54R??
-Or maybe it is acceptable on some rifles for the bullet to fit that tight in the barrel? I don't know enough about rifles in regards to that type of thing.

Thanks.

Well... It's "interesting" to say the least.

It's a bubba special.

It is comprised of a 1891 Finnish barrelled Mosin Nagant B barrel, with 1891 v. 1916 sight.
It was put in a Swedish 96 Mauser stock, with the bands belonging to a Swedish Mauser.

I have no idea what bubba may have done to the caliber - but the original Finnish mosins should be either 7.62x54R, or 7.62x53R. (Both interchangeable, some guns will chamber others won't, but generally, if it fits, it will fire. Wear on the barrel is another story.)
B barrel should be .3091 ish according to original military specs found in the "Mosin Nagant" book.

So you have a bubba rifle.

The Russians did have a 6.5x54 cartridge but the Finnish B barrel would have to be sleeved. Your best bet would be to slug the bore and measure with a micrometer, a chamber cast would also be a good idea.

Compare the bolt head and magazine to your 91/30. The odds are it's still in 7.62x54r if it feeds/extracts the rimmed cartridges.

Interesting project gun.

The first pic seems the firing pin is missing or changed........l cant even see lt.

Either way it looks sure sketchy, from the crowning to the front sight. If you did manage to get it to shoot with the proper caliber I would bet it would be a waste of time because its wont be accurate with the frankenstein set up.

Its a cut down Fin m91 in a m96 swede stock. The caliber is 7.62x54r.

Agree. Barrel was made in Belgium, also carries the D stamp which means it accepts the 7.62x54r. You say the round fits the chamber so I'd expect caliber hasn't changed. As for differences at the muzzle end, your Russian has either been counterbored a bit or has a very worn crown. A better pic of the Finn crown would likely show a very shallow crown or no crown at all if done in true Bubba fashion.
