Mossberg 144LS Part on Forend?

Hey guys, I recently bought a Mossberg 144LS and was just wondering what the black piece was on the forend, it can slide up and down inside a bracket. Does anyone know what this is? I have a picture(not my gun was too lazy to take a picture).

It's called a hand stop, so your hand will return to the same place everytime you shoot.

ok, thats a pretty good idea, so u just set it in one place and that way you know where to put your hand everytime. Thanks
