I finally got around to testing a Mossberg 146B that I bought on the EE a while ago. The old Mossy's got a peep sight and I was centering the front bead on the 10 ring. I could have adjusted the sight to bring the POI down a half an inch or so, but I was interested mainly in the group size. I figured 25 yds would actually be a better test of the rifle than 50, given the combination of iron sights and my vision. But I expect the gun would do about the same at 50.

Anyway, here are the results. 8 shots in one ragged hole is pretty good, I think, and the other 2 were probably me rather than the gun.

Overall I'm pretty impressed with this thing. It's clearly a good shooter and I like the full size dimensions (and, of course, the racy Mossberg trigger guard.) The tube magazine makes it a bit awkward for range use, but this would be a sweet, old fashioned field gun.

If it's got the front sight with the four interchangeable sights, try the ring aperture front and rear.

All you need to do is make sure you have an even ring of white around the bullseye.

Mine is a 146b-a

I just got my 146Ba from Eagleeye, and Holy Moly......she is some shooter. I may sell all my other .22's (8 of them) as none of them hold a candle to this one. Jeezus, she ain't too pretty and its super heavy for offhand shooting, but benchresting is amazing. I'm in love.

I actually like the looks of the thing. Sort of in the same way I like the looks of a '58 Chevy. As for weight, it's certainly no heavier than my Savage BV w/scope and I use that for silhouette shooting.

I kind of wonder how robust that peep sight is. It seems a bit flimsy. On the other hand it's been on the gun for fifty years or so, which I suppose says something.

I'm unlikely to ever mount a scope on it (the peep sight is too much fun), but I wonder how I could if I wanted to. There are two drilled & tapped holes for that purpose, but I don't know what kind of a mount would fit.

Funny this came up, as I am in the process of trying to "modernize" my 146 B with a scope mount and scope... it is a shooter too, but my eyes don't like the peeps...

Have to see if Brownells will ship the scope mount to Canada....

As Sgt Rock said, these rifles are shooters!! For the original price they were the bargain of the century. I still have two, a barrel-bolt and a round bolt model. Both outshoot many modern rifles that people tout as "accurate" Regards, Eagleye. BTW, I am online from the Philippines...going to enjoy a much-needed rest.

I have 4 old Mossbergs (scoped) and all shoot better than many of the modern "accurate" .22s. They are in stock configuration, I have outdone a few of the "built from ordered parts" rifles out to even 100 yards. 50 yards is kind of a norm for target shooters but i still can shoot decent at much further distances.Certainly not all in one hole but pleasingly enough for me.

The old 1940 Marlin 81s come a close second for the same distances but with the longer barrel, it patterns tighter at 100 yards. The Mossy and Marlin guns certainly proved themselves in the gopher fields twice already this year and are headed out again in 2 weeks.I just purchased a Marlin 81 with factory peep sights and will see how it shoots in the fields. Cannot beat these old guns.
