I picked up this old Mossberg on the weekend. It is a Mossberg 44B with the removable magazine and no4 aperture sight.
It doesn't say target rifle, but clearly is one, with a heavy barrel and target style stock. Overall this rifle is in excellent condition. It is 100% original.
I know these Mossberg 22s don't seem to fetch much in todays market, considering the quality of craftsmanship and inherent accuracy they are known for.
I know there are some vintage Mossberg enthusiast on here, so i figured I would share. I'm also curious to see what you guys figure it is worth.

It's definitely missing the hood for the front sight, but I don't think it came out of the factory with a standard rear sight. I appreciate you opinion on the value.

Yep , needs a sight hood , and looks like the detachable sling swivels are missing as well , and this is quite common. They are still obtainable I believe . Looks like it has a few extra holes drilled for a scope mount. That's a detractor to a collector. Still a nice old gun , and a real tack driver I'd bet ! I'm guessing value as /is around $250 . You would get a little more out of it if you bought the missing parts , but , that would cost you more than you would gain on the price. Keep it and shoot it , as is. They don't make them that good any more.

I'm pretty sure those side mount holes are original too. Definitely missing the detachable sling swivels, which seems to be extremely common. Thanks for your opinion.

Looks like a 44B Made 1938-1941 The holes in the receiver are factory. The #4 peep sight with the #4 adjustable iris is nice and adds to the value. That stock is original and untouched as well which is a bonus. There was no middle sight on this model. The sight hood is a minor thing. You can buy repros from Numerich for $12. It's hard to tell the condition of the metal in the pictures but it looks fairly good. Swivels are not a big deal either. They come up from time to time at shows. You could likely get $250-300 from what I see in the pictures.

The peep sight with that adjustable aperture is roughly $100.00 item today. But the sum of parts sold separately is worth more than selling a gun as a whole. So I think with that aperture $250.00 to $300.00 for the gun is very reasonable. You could add a bit more if it had the swivels and front sight hood.

Thanks, Gunsaholic. I respect your opinion, and I was hoping you would chime in.
I've come across my fair share of vintage mossbergs, and it's the only original 44b I've ever seen.

I have a model 44 without the 'B', and without the cheekpiece. Inherited it from my father-in-law who shot the Dominion Marksman series with it many decades ago. Very accurate old rig, but I'm not a fan of the multi-bladed front sight. That's cheap and nasty. The two screw holes on the action are orig.
Your pics seem to show some slight damage on the forend, like a screwhole or two. Mine has a little metal plate in the same place engraved with the owners' name and the initials of his Scarborough rifle club.
Just saw another one at the gun show in Renfrew yesterday. It was fairly beat, not nearly as clean as yours, no sight hood, no swivels and obvious signs of neglect. Seems to me it was tagged just under $300.

Too bad I don't get to see some of the pictures on some forums. Don't know why I see some and not others. I have 2 of the model 44's - a 44B(a) (missing swivels & sight hood) and a 44US(b). Both are good shooters. As others have stated $250-$300 should be about right. I have seen swivels for $20 single and up to $100 for pair with lots of prices in between. The sight hoods were about $20 here in Canada but seem to be about $35 now. In the few years I have been collecting the prices for the Mossbergs seem to have doubled. Makes it harder for a collector on fixed income.- Bill

Just saw the pictures you posted in the EE. You have a Speigel/special order model there. Two holes drilled in receiver and two holes drilled in barrel are Speigel special order. Even more difficult to find.

Thanks for posting. The only Spiegel I have seen is the B26M that I have. Same D&T so is factory but this one could still be special order if it wasn't so marked. Would make it rare. The pictures I have seen were marked usually. Wish I knew more about Spiegels and Specials. I have heard some came out of the factory as special orders and some were made special for (or by) employees. The chart has no mention of a Special or Spiegel in model 44 but jumps from43S (at 21)1938 & 43BS (at 91)1939 to 45AS (at 137) & S45A (at 805) both in 1938. May be this one is part of the lost records. - Bill

" speigel" - seems like it would be for a scout type scope , seems odd for this type of 22 , the peeps would be for me ( or the side mount scope )
You guys sure them screws( barrel or reciever ) wouldn't be used for a leaf type sight ?
I assumed they were for a scope mount ??
