I just got a Mossberg 46 mb .22 bolt. action rifle. It is in good shape but I think I will try and redo the stock. Can anyone tell me if this is a job that an inexperienced person can do? Also I need a side scope mount but they only sell in the states and can't ship to me.Anyone know where I can get one for this rifle?

I too purchased one of these rifles not too long ago and am going to refinish it. I believe you should have no trouble refinishing the stock and you will get quite a bit of enjoyment from doing it. (This is an overview of what I do and suggest you do more research before proceeding to get some of the details down I may have forgotten) Remove all hardware. I usually strip the stock with furniture stripper, suck out any dents with a hot iron and a wet cloth, sand in 5 levels starting at 150 grit and working down to 400 then finish with 0000 steel wool, stain the wood if desired ( I am going to try Minwax red mahogany this time) and finish with Tru Oil.

As for the mount I ordered one from Numrich in the States and they shipped over the border no problem, it took about a week. Make sure you order any other items you may need like sling swivels or the red and green pins for fire and safe at the same time because shipping is costly.

I have finished a miriad of stocks and never used sandpaper...only steel wool and fine furniture finish remover. The variety of steel wool do not remove wood, they may create a very fine dust that works into the pores and when oiled and a few coats rubbed in ...give a very nice finish. over top of it all, i use Min Wax paste polish.

many collectors of guns frown on unoriginal, sanded stocks. But for your own gathering, do as you please
