Looking at buying this as a first shotgun. Anything bad/good to say about them? Seems like most ppl. like them from what i've seen posted here.

I have a Mossberg 500 12ga, 28" barrel with interchangeable chokes. I use it occaisionally for small game (rabbits and grouse) but its main use is field hunting for geese. It sees a lot of mud, water and just general abuse, but has never let me down. Pop out one pin to completely field strip it. I plan on picking up another one this year to use as a dedicated slug gun.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a Mossberg 500. Actions are solid and reliable, price is very affordable. The biggest limiting factor of the 500 is the limit to rounds in the tube (No extensions ala 870 for 8+ rounds) and so the Mossberg 500 isn't as tactical friendly as a 870.
All 12ga Mossy 500's (Barring single action bar versions from the 60's) are equiped with barrels that accept up to 3". Aftermarket parts are not as available in Canada as in the US. I myself have a few Mossy 500's and have never had any jams or misfires that were not caused by ammunition.

All that being said. The weakest link of the Mossy is the Trigger assy housing which is plastic/polymer. If the locating tabs break (Don't drop it on the trigger group in the cold) it's a pain to get a new housing and then re-assemble the trigger assembly. Not very likely but still a potential pain.
