does it with 3" slugs or 2 3/4 #7.5

if you dont hold the action tightly closed it will open to the point where the shell almost ejects. its had lots of rounds down the tube, what would cause this?

shouldnt it stay firmly shut until i rack the slide>?

I thought that's just how they are....if I apply pressure towards the rear of the gun it makes for a quick ejection. If it stayed locked up you'd need to push the release button near the trigger guard every time you fired a shot.

I bought my 500 new, 20 years ago...

It's always behaved that way for me...not a whole lot "looser" ejecting for the 1000's of rounds through it...

ONCE I tried a few of buddy's 3" hand loads...positive energy on the slide served only to rack the next one...

As long as you can't open the action until you press the release or, pull the trigger.

If you shoot your shotgun one handed, or lightly hold the foregrip, IT SHOULD NOT OPEN BY ITSELF after a shot.

Something is definitely wrong.

it locks up solid, in no way can i open it without using the slide release, but everytime i shoot 3" slugs, i cant help but think that it functions just like my 10/22, except that it doesnt fling the empty hull

any pump I have ever fired will open at least partially unpon fireing

My Fabarm also does the same with 3" magnum slugs. It only opens partially after firing and if I fire it one handed it does not open, so I can't blame the shotgun. It is really due to the significant recoil slinging your forearm rearward.

It does allow for a wicked cycle time with a little practice, so just work on it and enjoy the same reload speed as an expensive semi? ;)

All pump shotguns release after firing. If they didn't you would not be able to load another round unless you fumbled for the release button. The older the gun and more rounds fired they all get a little looser. With heavier loads and some slugs the bolt and forearm will get driven rearward. You can't stop it. Remember what you were taught in school. For every action ,there is an equal and opposite reaction. Heavy loads= more rearward motion . Enjoy it ,it helps to load the next round.:agree:

Here's the test. Take an MT gun and cycle the action to #### it. Now, pull rearward on the slide, while pulling the trigger. You will hear the hammer fall, but nothing should happen if the gun is in proper working order. If the action releases at the moment the trigger is pulled you chance firing out of battery. The slide is released with a slight forward movement then can be pulled back to fully cycle. In live firing, even with very light loads, there is enough recoil to bump the slide forward and release it, even though you are pulling on the slide to keep the gun tight in your shoulder. It may seem that upon firing that the slide moves by itself, but this is not the case if the gun is in proper working condition.

That is not true for all shotguns. The rem 870 works that way (not sure about the 500), but a win 1200/1300 releases the slide as soon as you pull the trigger, there is no inertia block involved in the release. Some see this configuration as a benefit in a defensive gun, because in a panic the slide will release (prompting quick cycling) if you happen to have an empty chamber or a dud shell.

there is nothing wrong with yoru gun .i found that if you lay the gun down on say a case as a reast and shot it the gun will partly open ater the shot .if you keep forward pressue on the forend you will notice a difference thy are ment to unlock after the shot
