Newbie to the forums here, haven't posted much, just been absorbing the wealth of knowledge and humor found on these boards.
I have an old Mossberg 500 ATP that was my dads, it has sat somewhat dirty for many years and I am working on bringing it back to life. This will be my first project, and one I really don't want to screw it up.
I have disassembled and cleaned it a couple times and brought it by the gun shop to see if they thought it was safe to fire. They gave me the go ahead so I put a box through it.
There was some light rust on the inside and outside of the barrel, I cleaned most of it out of the inside prior to shooting and the birdshot cleaned it up even better. Only a small amount remains at the muzzle end.
My questions are:
-Any suggestions on rust removal from the outside of the barrel without damaging the remaining blue? I have tried Hoppes 9 with a brass brush and this seems to work alright. I have also tried 0000 steel wool with some gun oil, I seem to have better results with the brass and hoppes. Should I try 000 steel wool or does anybody have some better suggestions. Im not overly concerned about the blue but would like to leave as much as possible until I get around to refinishing.
-Anyone have suggestions on cleaning the trigger group without disassembling? Boil it? Soak in iso alcohol? I have done everything I can with brushes and q tips.
-Is it ok to boil the bolt and bolt slide to try to remove some of the tough grime (very little amount) that just isnt coming off? Or should I try the 0000 steel wool on that?
Any help here is much appreciated!
