Hi there, I am looking at purchasing the mossberg 500 slug combo-12 ga-26" field and 24"rifle deer cantilever barrel...

what are your thoughts/personal experiences..... I will use this shotgun only for turkey and shotgun deer season.....I plan on getting a turkey choke for the field barrel and a scope for the deer barrel.....

I have a semi-auto I will use for everything else.... so is this mossberg 500 combo selling for $299.00 any good?
 
the newer mossbergs with double rails are fairly solid, smooth, actions. i have one i use as a truck gun and it handles any loads ive put though it. after 5 years i cant recall any issues with mine, and its never been to a 'smith yet. my only complaint is i like the trigger guard 870 safeties more than the tang ones on the mossy. there are some (not as much as 870) after market accessories availible for them too, if thats your thing.

as far as a the gun with two barrels for $300, i think you would be hard pressed to find a better combo for less money. if you want to spend more, there are other options availible, but IMHO you cant go wrong with the mossy @ $300.
 
Hello - I can't comment on the Model 500, but I have the Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag turkey/deer combo and I couldn't be happier with it. Cycles well and is very reliable. For $299, I think you'll be very happy with the set-up.

Or the stock was to long for him (assuming he was holding it correctly). When I first got mine, the wood stock was about 1.5" to long for me and it made a big diff. in the effect of the recoil
 
I've got a Mossy 535 ATS combo (pretty much the same thing as the 500, just has an extra turkey barrel) and it pretty much eats everything and anything. Never a problem with loading or ejection. Don't worry about it "kicking like a mule" unless your at the range shooting 5 - 10 slugs in a row, then it might be bothersome. But while out in the field hunting, the last thing your going to think about when shooting is the Recoil.
 
I was in the gun shop 2-weeks ago looking at one. I had the catiliever barrel installed. I brought it up to my shoulder, and the cantiliever mount was improperly indexed at about 5 deg to the left. It was very noticable, so I mentioned it too the guy, he said "it didnt matter". It mattered to me so I handed it back.
However, I have shot these and they seem like a great reliable gun....just a heads up on my experience

every gun manufacturer rolls out potential defects (although that 5 degree cant would drive me crazy and i would send it back immediately).
i would be more worried about your gun shop salesman/owner telling you that 'it doesnt matter' that the cantilever is off by 5 degrees.
it sure as #%@$ing hell matters.
