mossberg 500 cycling problem

After a recent cleaning (might not be the cause but...) My 12G mossy started to occasionally not eject the spent shell and then attempt to load another. Very annoying at best but at least it was just shooting clays instead of at game. Anybody have any ideas of a fix or has any body else heard of this?


It bugged me but my brother brought out his new unfired 535 and it happened to him a couple of times too.

Although it only happens with cheap ammo

It's as if the extractor actually takes a bite out of the shell casing...

Same thing is happening to mine. Must be a 500 problem.

It's doing it mostly with the cheapest of the cheap Winchesters.

A thorough cleaning of the barrel helps but it doesn't eliminate the problem. Dissapointing.

My friends 590 that was purchased at the same time as mine has no such problems with the same ammo.

Any Mossberg's that I have owned liked to be shot dry ( specially in cold conditions)-- Remove all oil from the bolt and all slides.

It is a common problem with the mossbergs. What worked for me was to give some extra torque on that large nut on the end of the forearm on reassembly. (channel locks and a pice of rubber to protect the metal). It seems like hand tight just does not get things back where they are supposed to be. This corrected the feeding / extraction issues that I am hearing.

The only time I've had any problems with my Mossberg 500 is from short stroking/being gentle on ejection.....even with cheapy shells.
