Hey guys,

Just picked up a Mossberg 500 as my first shotgun, also picked up some tipton snap caps for it. While learning how handle it I did some dry firing. When the chamber is clear I can hear the hammer click, when I rack a snap cap in the chamber it wont fire, rack again to clear the chamber and click it drops no problem.

Am I missing something here?

Any help is much appreciated, I'd like to be comfortable with this before going to the range next week!

Can you see an indent on the primer area of the snap cap? The snap caps I've owned have a soft rubber like "primer" which may be causing the strike to sound different

No indents in the brass "primer" - its got a spring in it to absorb the hit too. I colored it with a marker then tried again, no strike marks.

Do you have to use the slide release after pulling the trigger with the snap cap?

Negative

I'm going to buy a different brand of snap cap today on my way to work, maybe thats the issue.

I guarantee it's your snap caps and there's nothing wrong with your Mossy 500. Take it to the range and have fun with it... I'd stop using those snap caps ASAP.
