Hi guys,
I just got a Lakefield Mossberg 500A off the EE here.
I stripped it down and noticed that the bolt did not have a firing pin spring in it? is this normal?
The firing pin appears to be free floating (like in the sks), and moves when I shake it.
I've shot it at the range an it appears to be fine. I have been practicing loading/trigger pull with it by dry firing and I fear this lack of a firing pin spring might cause some damage to it.

Anybody else's shotgun not have a firing pin spring?

Thanks.

It's not uncommon for the early 400/500's to not have a firing pin return spring.
Manufacturer's are always changing certain aspects of their firearm and the addition of the return spring was one of them. As long as your bolt is free of dirt and debris, the floating firing pin should not be an issue.

Well just called Canadian Mossberg Service center at 519-509-4867 (got number from their Texas branch), the guy seemed quite impatient and told me Every Mossberg 500 new and old have firing pin springs, and that the only way for it to come out is if "the firing pin broke in half". He said for me to e-mail him my visa number and for $15.00 he would send me a spring.

Judging by his demeanor, I would rather not give him my credit card number, thru e-mail especially.

The Texas branch refused to send me a new spring because they told me it was Restricted.

Needless to say I'm on my own on this one, If I knew Mossberg had such bad customer service I would have gone with a Remington.

I just always try to buy American because of my past good experience with Tapco and Tippmann ie. "Oh your [part] is broken? Whats you address we'll send you a new one for free". Gotta love the companies that still stand behind their product and most importantly know what they are talking about.

Sorry about the rant.

What vintage is your 500? Is it equipped with two action bars? (post 1971 production) I just checked all of mine with these results: 16 gauge 500B made in 1969 no spring, 12 gauge 500 AB about 1971 production, no spring, 500 C 20 gauge current production no spring, 500 E .410 current no spring, 500 mid '80's production no spring, current production 500 (combo) has a spring! There is nothing wrong with your 500 shoot it and have fun. You can't pump it hard enough to cause it to fire.

regards, Darryl

Wow Thanks for checking all that for me madtrapper. Mine is a Mossberg Lakefield 500A. Not sure about production year as I got it off EE. It has 2 action bars. Taking it to the range tomorrow, I'm sure I won't be having any problems.
Thanks for all the advice guys.
