hey guys. tried finding something about this but couldnt. the other day me and a friend went shooting with my mossberg 500. He shot one round with no issue, but when he cycled the action i saw him fumbling around and now the spring inside of the magazine seems to have shot out and been lost(im clueless as to what happened). when you load shells into the tube they dont pop back up to the edge and instead drop to the end of the tube. and as a result when cycling the action the gun must be barrel-up to load a shell into the chamber. im not a very knowledgeable guy when it comes to gunsmithing so any help is much appreciated!

It's pretty well impossible to lose the actual spring. The follower maybe...but the spring not so much.

Sounds like the follower has rotated in the tube and has caused the magazine spring to bind. The magazine plug may be involved. I had this happen on my 535.

Course of action:

#1 Remove the barrel from the gun by turning the takedown bolt with the bolt half closed/open. Use a cleaning rod to try and free up the follower by inserting it into the magazine tube through the threaded hole the barrel screws into.

#2 Remove the magazine by unscrewing the entire tube and try harder. Your magazine follower and spring may shoot out across the room. So be wary where you have the thing pointed. Eye protection might be a good idea.

Once you have it resolved, buy a no-jam follower.
