Just wondering if I really need the 535, great price on them right now, but from most of what I have read, not to many people are using the 31/2" shells anyway....

I will probably get a combo field/deer just not sure if its going to be the 500 or 535, this is where the help is needed... the price difference between them is only about $30.00...thanks....

I guess my questions are

1. Which is more reliable or do they have the same reliability...
2. Does the 500 cycle cheap 2 3/4" shells (for target practice) better than the 535...

My thoughts on the Mossberg 500. Good value for money, it feeds 2 3/4inch cheapo walmart bulk pack(100's) well. Nice crisp cycling of action, kind of plain looking, but good knock about kind of shotgun.

Drawbacks(speaking for myself) are kicking like a mule with 3" slugs, to me it feels like a jab in the cheek bone. Maybe I'm a recoil sissy, not sure. Am I getting rid of it? Nope, very functional. I can't speak of the 535 though, others can help you with that.:)

Mossberg 590s...

...I've got the 590 Mariner and my brother the 590A1.

Both are amazing shotguns.

No chances are you won't need the 3.5 inch shell, but the option is there if you ever decide you want it. I had a 3.5 inch 870 once, I still have half a box of 3.5" Kent BBB that I never used. They make a nice souviner. :D

Who knows what's going to happen down the road. With the cost of metals going through the roof, heck even shotgun ammo may get hard to find so it makes sense to be able to shoot whatever you are able to buy. But if your not too concerned, a 3 inch gun will handle everything and anything. Remember not long ago a 2 3/4 inch gun did it all too. I used one for years with no problems. And even today I have no problem shooting the little shell, it just so happens I buy my ammo when I find it on sale. And if it's 2 3/4" or 3", it makes no difference to me, as it's coming home. Thankfully I've yet to encounter any 3 1/2" stuff on sale. :p

i have a mossberg 535 ,it will handle anything i have put through it .light ,heavy, rifled slugs or sabots it functions flawlessly.my advice ,get it ,you cant fire 3.5's in a 500 but you dont have to fire them in the 535,just my 2 cents worth.

So what I am getting is the mossberg 535 doesn't experience any problems with extracting the cheaper 2 3/4" shells and has the ability to chamber and extract the 3 1/2" shells as well without any problems, so best of both worlds..... So unless someone contradicts.... its the mossberg 535 combo, for $300....
