My brother in law and I recently purchased Mossberg 500 combos which come with a field and fully rifled deer barrel. The deer barrel has Williams open sights. We were trying to sight these guns in with the Hornady SST sabot slugs at 100 yards without any luck. With the rear sight lowered to it's maximum limits, these slugs were hitting 10 inches too high. I can't bring the sights down any lower which makes me believe that this barrel and sight combination was made for the slower velocity slugs. The Hornady have a muzzle velocity of 1900 fps, as does the Winchester partition gold and Remington core lokt sabot slugs (both of which I've regretfully purchased as well).

Other than throwing a scope on it, getting a taller front sight or shooting the slower slugs, are there any solutions to this problem?

Anyone else have this same issue?

Thanks,

Ivan

Casper, I'm afraid your wrong, it can get confusing sometimes. You want to move the REAR sight in the direction of where you want your slug to go. In this case to shoot lower, you have to lower the rear sight. As for the front sight the opposite holds true, higher front sight will print lower.

You could CAREFULLY file down the notch in your rear sight, a little at a time, until it prints to POA with the load of your choice.

Wear a recoil shield when you're benching that 500 with those 1900 fps slugs. :D
