Okay. I was going to buy one of the available super shorties in a 12.5" or 14" and then I start hearing stories like "My Norinco Crapped out". And let's face it even a low use firearm needs to work right when called upon. I have a perfectly good Mossberg 500 with a 28" barrel, I want a 12.5" or 14" barrel so I can convert this sucker to a legal pack gun. The question is why isn't there an available short barrel for the Moss 500?

The 18.5 are nice, since you have a full length mag tube. Super shorties sacrifice mag capacity.

I'm not worried about tactical applications here, I'm literally looking for a backpack gun for my summer hiking. I've been lucky when it comes to bears so far, a couple of near misses so to speak, but I would rather have the piece of mind. A proper 18.5" still gets heavy and big feeling by then end of the day. I wish we could get permit to carry handguns in this country.

im faced with the same dilemma myself... id like a very compact backpacking shotgun as well.

i have an 8-shot mossberg persuader with a 20" barrel and the thing is huge. even with a pistol grip its far too big to pack. the 8-shot mag is excessive as well - fully loaded the gun weighs far too much, and if youre not going to fully load it then the 8-shot mag is superfluous.

you can probably get an 18" barrel with a top folder to be more useful than a 14" or 12.5" barrel. with the 14" or 12.5" you wont be able to put a folding stock on it or it will probably be under the 660mm limit. you would have to use the legal loophole and put a pistol grip only on it, risk it being confiscated by a cop who doesnt know the law, and a short shotgun with a pistol grip is brutal to fire.

for myself ive decided on getting a top-folder with an 18" barrel. above 660mm so even cops who dont know the law cant argue, and once unfolded it becomes a fully functional shotgun as opposed to something with an 8" barrel and pistol grip that is useless for most applications.

Just out of curiosity I pulled one of my 500's out of the safe and measured it. The barrel mounts differently than on an 870 and some others, as a result the barrel would have to be minimum 15.5" to mount on a standard length mag tube. Realistically speaking though, a 5 shot Maverick 88 or synthetic stocked 500 with 18.5" barrel, is a whole 4.5" longer than a 14" barreled Norc 870 clone (roughly the width of your hand). Due to the Mossberg/Mavericks aluminum reciever, it probably weighs in about the same as the Norc.

Mag capacity isnt really an issue. Your never going to get more than 1 or 2 shots off before the bear is dead or chewing on you.

Their is an 14" 5+1 barreled version of the 590 available. They do pop up in the EE from time to time, but they do tend to be a little pricier due to their rarity. Nice looking shotguns, wish that I'd picked one up when they were easily available (and cheaper).

Is the Mossberg 500's 18.5" barrel interchangeable with the Mossberg Maverick Mdl :50cal:88?

yes. I have put the longer 88 barrel on my 500 for bird hunting, and have put the 500 barrel on the 88 for kicking around the campfire.
The 500 has a way smoother action and i like where the safety is compared to the 88. I interchange them to suite my needs.

Short barrels...

Recently purchased an 18.5" Mossberg 500 barrel for my Maverick 88 and it's a beaut! Now I love my 28"er, but the ease of swing and the light weight makes it numero uno for this boy (I'm 55) LOL It would work just fine for a pack gun and :50cal:besides, a shotgun looks sooooooooo ###y with a short barrel!

I have a 14" fabarm, but before that I had a 18.5" Mossy 500 mariner. I sold the mossy for the shorter fabarm, because I wanted a more compact camp gun. here is an old pic of them. there is quite a difference in size. I love how compact the shorter fabarm is
