Mossberg 500 vs 590, Difference ?

I've owned both, just buy the 500. I had a 20", 9 shot 500 and a 590 and a 590A1 all at the same time and came to the conclusion you're giving up essentially nothing with the regular 500. No bayo lug, blued not parkerized, different map cap/barrel retaining system and essentially that's it.

Both 500 and 590 were made with either plastic and metal triggerguard and safety. Both 500 and 590 were made with either blued and parkerized finish. 590 was made with either bayonet lug and no bayonet lug.

The key difference in in the ease of maintenance of the interior of the magazine tube. (The 590 is easy. The 500 is not.)

If I recall, I remember a couple of people telling me that the Mossberg uses the same receiver for the 500 and 590 anyways.

I own a 590 and I love it but I would even settle for a Mav 88 if I was tight on a budget. Mossberg makes a good product for the money. A 500 will do you good.

Isn't it the A1's that come with the metal trigger guard and safety button? Thicker barrel on the A1's as well.

FYI Brownell's has a very cheap conversion to turn any old 500 into a 20" barreled shotgun with extended 8rd tube and rifle sights. Good option for those looking for something a little more tactical.

Yes, the 590A1 has a heavier barrel, which serves little purpose but to make it harder to carry, and metal trigger guard and safety, the regular 590 does not. Frankly, unless you frequent very very cold areas, you don't need the A1, polymer's worked fine for Glock for some time now. However, I have heard of, but never seen, 500 and 590 plastic safeties breaking in cold weather. Perhaps...

had a safety break on me. The plastic on the 500's appears to be of an inferior quality to me. The sheer robustness of the 590a1 is attractive to me as a toss-around bear/truck gun. Besides, I can straighten out the tail pipe of my truck exhaust with that thick walled barrel. :)
