Mossberg 500 vs Remington 870?

Planning on buying my first firearm and have decided that I will be getting a shotgun. Not sure whether the 500 or the 870 would be the better choice. I'm sure it's been discussed many times, but I am fairly new (done some benchrest .22 plinking). Some insight would be appreciated.

Mossberg 500 would be my choice over an 870. Remington went through too many hands (cost savings) over the years if you want a good shotgun I would highly consider the Mossberg - I have the budget friendly Maverick 88 and it well built for the price point.

Take a look at the Benelli Supernova, from my experience it’s a better shotgun than a new 500 or 870.

Both good choices, pick the one that feels best or that you prefer shooting. I have used both extensively and prefer the Mossberg.
870 express models are often poorly finished and rust easily.

My vote is for the Mossberg also. These guns can take a lot of abuse and a lot of dirt before they start to fail.

I prefer the older 870 Wingmaster over any Mossberg. Whatever you do, don't buy a tactical shotgun that will get used at the range a few times, and then will sit unused when the novelty wears off.

Order Wingmasters are what I look for when looking at pump guns.
For a new pump however, between the two I would choose the Mossberg

My vote is for Mossberg. I have had many and really like them. On a 500 with a conventional stock or magpul stock, the safety is in the best location.

A caveat is if it's going to be a pistol grip tactical shotgun for you, you may want to go with the Mossberg Maverick 88 due to the safety location.

I like the Mossberg 500/590 shotguns they have not failed me yet
The 88 maverick is a good choice too
If you want a Remington I suggest finding a good used older model when they still had decent QC

I wanted a 870. But I bought a Blueline instead. It's a rock solid alternative to the 870. $269 on Black Friday. Absolutely can't go wrong.

I like the 500 series, I am planning on adding on a 590m when I can but that's just personal preference.

I've owned both. There really isn't a wrong choice between the two. I prefer the 870 because that's what I'm more familiar with but I would not consider myself at a disadvantage in any situation with a Mossberg 500.

The problem with 870s is that non have been manufactured in the last 2 years ....
And most dealers are out of stock ....

It is uncertain when and how 870s will be produced again.

So that leaves you with the used market right now.

Or an 870 clone like the Blue Line Pump ..... they are available brand new.

I prefer the mossberg 500 over the 870. The dual extractors and screw in ejector are solids pros and the safety is familiar if you use alot of double guns
With the 500 platform 1 gun can do everything from HD and short confined spaces to bird hunting and clays while having the option for a slug barrel smooth or rifled and even a 50cal muzzleloader barrel.
