First of all, is this the right spot for this thread? I didn't know. I figured that this wouldn't fit under "black and green shotguns" but oh well.

Anyways, my brother is interested in buying his first shot gun. After long debate he is looking at getting a Mossberg 835. Now I have a Mossberg 535 and I love it! However, I know nothing about the differences between the two...both take the same shells, both come with the same chokes, same lengths.

So what is the difference? Or is there? And just for kicks, what would you suggest for a first time shot gun? (350-450$ range)

Thanks guys.

I belive the 835 has a overbored and vented barrel while the 535 is a regular barrel. Their web site should have the answer.

u cant shoot slugs in the 835 I believe but 535 is good to go.
I have a 535 but now I need a shorter barrel and slug barrel to top it off.

let him pick them both up. the 835 feels great and the 535 is front end heavy and feels like a piece of crap.

My 835 came with a rifled slug barrel. I have shot slugs out of it.
Don't know the difference between 535 and 835. I do know that if I am buying choke tubes for the 835 the Carlson site shows chokes the same for the 835 and 935 but doesn't say the 535.

The slug barrel for the 835 is regular 12 bore dia. The sot barrel is overbored (larger than regular 12 ga dia) that is why the chokes are not the same.

The 535 is a Mossberg 500 with 3 1/2" capability nothing else is different.

The 835 is a Waterfowl gun at heart with the overbored 28" barrel. Mine came with a rifle sighted Slug barrel that is the same as any rifled barrel for 12g.

The 535 comes with a 3 or 4 barrel combo usually for around $450 its hard to beat for your first shotgun when it is 4 guns in one.

I like my 835 and I use it strictly as a Deer gun with a red dot on top and the rifled barrel.

on mine just the one barrel, I guess I missed out on those deals, but I would've like the rifled one aswell. oh well later maby.
