Mossberg 590 Disassembly

My new shotgun arrived today, and so I decided to give it the customary clean and lube.

In disassembling it, I noticed that the mag tube cap (the first thing to take off when disassembling) was extremely stiff, and I needed a pair of grips to get it off and back on.

I obviously don't want to do this every time, as it will ruin the finish pretty quickly, and in watching videos on the webs, it seems that it should screw on and off fairly easily. I tried giving it some oil, but it's still a proper bastard to move.

Does anyone have any tips on what I can do to resolve this?

Mine was just as tight, and every video online shows these things coming off so easily. Ya right! Anyway, I had to use pliers to get it off the first time, but instead of putting the pliers directly on the mag cap, I folded-up an envelope a few times and wrapped it around the cap before applying pressure.

When I screwed the cap back on, just made it finger tight.

I agree SS, finger tight with a bit of light grease on the threads; it won't go anywhere, and should be easier to remove the next time.

You can also use a penetrating oil like kroil when something is really stuck on there
