I'm wondering how to remove the magazine spring from the mag tube. I use to own a Mossberg 500 Slugster about 4 years ago, and the way I did this was I twisted off the mag tube right off the receiver. I attempted this same method with my new M590A1 and it wasn't budging...also, I didn't want to force it.

At the end of the mag tube once you remove the cap, there is a "retainer" holding the spring inside the mag tube...is this meant to be removed?

Thanks for any assistance.

You must remove the retainer, in order to remove the spring. Be careful the spring is under a moderate load and will shoot out if not carefully removed.

I have the 590 and the retainer can simply be removed by gently prying with a flat screwdriver in the slotted part of the opening, on one side, then on the other. (It looks kind of like a keyhole) Be prepared, it will fly off.

There are two kinds of Mossberg mag tubes and barrel attachments; one is similar to the Remington and the other one (which sounds like you have) is more permenantly attached. I read somehwere that it can come off but I never was able to get it off of my 500 mariner.
I can't remember where I saw the info, try searching the Mossbrerg wesite if you haven't already.
Not much help I know, but the info is out there somewhere.
Cheers

That's exactly the method that I used in my 590A1. Piece o' cake!
