Mossberg 590 Nightstick

Those bird head grips really are just a novelty. If you actually want to use the gun for something other than just making noise get a stock.

I do happen to have one for sale on the EE
They do have a niche and there are even a few tactical shotgun trainers who have classes in their use, but they're certainly not for everyone.

My fav upgrade to date, I imported an AVRI knuckle grip, 100% polymer. pretty rigid

Check out the Opsol mini clip or similar type insert so you can decide if you want to try making or buying mini shells.

It’ll take some practice to be proficient with one and especially if you’re planning to load it with anything heavier than birdshot. The front bead is far too low and will shoot super high if you try and use it to aim, higher bead will help with that. A wrist strap from demonstrated concepts works really well to make it more shootable.

Adding a stock makes it much easier to use as you’d expect.

Personally I find a super short with a stock more practical in a similar sized package

For pack shotguns i always recommend finding the shortest functional shotgun you can for a decent price and then putting the shortest LOP or youth stock on it. It's INFINITELY more usable than a birds head grip and only a couple inches longer.
Can a full grown man even get a cheek weld on a youth stock? I would think you'll end up with a mouthful of your own wrist/thumb?

I’d double check the length, most pistol grips will bring it below 26”. Bird head grip that comes on the Nightstick and Tac-14 keep it above 26”.

Far from a novelty, it’s just a different technique to shooting one properly. Once you learn that it’s not much different than a full stock, I used a tac14 clone for a season to shoot grouse on the road on fall. Plenty effective.

Lots of videos from other shotgun guys, demonstrating the proper technique but I think Clint sums it up perfectly.

Yup, I have the 14.5" 590 and it is over 26" with the raptor grip and under with the pistol grip. I have the Fab defence stock and it is essentially a pistol grip with a carbine stock that is removable... but then would be illegal.

That is a very cool grip , I think it would work better on a birdshead or raptor grip for when things get up close

I have a 590 Shockwave and once I put on a red dot I can hit steel plates with slugs at 25 to 50 yards with no problem. The red dot solved the issue that the Shockwave does shoot pretty high with its low bead front sight.
I have never had an issue with getting punched in the face with it even holding it at eye level even with full power loads using a push pull grip. I actually feel far less beat up than with a stocked 12 gauge pump after 50 rounds.
I'm almost 65, I'm sure the young pups shouldn't have a problem with it. It isn’t as intuitive as a stocked shot gun, but after 500 rounds or so it feels pretty natural now.

Probably fun for pissing around, doesn't really solve any known issues, don't really see any benefits, but I see the fun in it.

I would consider restricting a 14inch mossberg just for the look of that pistol grip one .
That’s not how it works. Put a pistol grip on it, and it’s shorter than 26” overall makes it prohibited.

From the C.C.C 84(1):

prohibited firearm means

  • (b) a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted,
    • (i) is less than 660 mm in length, or
    • (ii) is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length,

The number of people that post pics of what appear to be illegally modified shotguns on here tell me this isn’t nearly as well known as it should be.

those are fun and useful guns. Like any other guns, time behind the trigger is needed and it makes a very convenient pack/truck gun.

The bird head feels more confortable than a pistol grip.

Enjoy ;)
