I have a new Mossberg 590 that the slide doesn't release immediately when dry fired or shot, have to apply forward pressure on the forarm to unlock, is this normal for these? Or is gunsmith attention needed?

Never had that issue with mine. Maybe do a full strip of the receiver and clean it up, YouTube is your friend if you've never done it before.

The gun needs a bit of forward pressure on the forearm to release the bolt. This is usually masked by the recoil of a shot, but can be a bit of a problem with dry fire, particularity with a great deal of rearward pressure on the forearm. Once the gun wears in a bit, it won't be as noticeable, but it is a feature common to all pump shotguns, noticeable more on some than others.

Sounds like you are not pumping all the way forward if that is happening. Don't baby it, pump that mofo. If that's not the problem, go from there. Take it apart and lube all metal on metal moving parts.

All my 590/500's are smooth as butter.

Use a nice light grease on twin action bars that contact interior of receiver, bolt carrier, and inside of receiver rails were action bars slide in/out from. It should be as smooth a butter, not gritty and rough.
