So I grabbed a used one of these on a whim, mostly only because it was so cheap. No real experience with shotguns before this, but the reviews look solid and it's only had 25 rounds put through it. I'm up on all the legal stuff regarding the capacity, my main question was what shells I can use.

I've read and been told that I can shoot everything except for sabot rounds (due to lack of rifling). But I've also been told that since this model is fixed choke (OC), I won't get great results with buckshot and that this is primarily a defense shotgun. I'd like to use this for skeet, range time shooting paper and maybe ducks next year. Since it is coming to me at a decent price, having the barrel threaded to accept chokes might be an option.

Opinions? Suggestions?

It's a combat type shotgun but that doesn't mean you can't have fun shooting skeet with it. You will have to pattern it with different loads to see what it can do as is.
I guess you could choke it but you could just as easy buy a used pump gun that comes with a longer barrel and chokes for ducks.

Enjoy it for what it is.

Go through my recent threads. I'm really happy with the 590a1.

It's combat proven so it will take whatever you can throw at it in 2 3/4" and 3"

Amongst those new to shotguns, the term "Defender" seems to have become synonymous with, and applied to, any short barrel shotgun, regardless of manufacture. Its a minor mistake which for the most part can be over looked, though it tends to annoy the enthusiast.

I'll grab the pictures tonight, I haven't picked it up yet. Looking through the Mossberg website, it looks like the 590 Special Purpose 9-shot, but with the pistol grip and adjustable stock from the 590A1Special Purpose Adjustable Stock model

Mossberg, bringer of the roadblock and chainsaw models...... a defender is a slam dunk.
:)

Not a fan of Pistol gripped 590's.

Pictures as promised. It appears the adjustable stock can be swapped out?

Really nice Mossberg 590. I love that setup...minus the stock. Full size 9 shot M590A1 with bead sight and parkerized heatshield....WOW....all its missing is a SpeedFeed stock (Solid or 4 shells).

Im actually looking for that exact model you have lol....to compliment my 14" Compact with Ghost Ring sights and SpeedFeed stock (holds 4 shells) 6+4 = 10 shells in a compact little 14" pump gun....Beautiful ;)

But I absutely love the fullsize 9 shot parkerized M590A1with bead sight and heatshield, truely a bad-@$$ shotgun ;)

Good catch....

Cheers ;)

Thanks:) It was a totally spur of the moment thing that just popped up used.

You seem to know a decent amount about them, am I able to swap the stock out or am I going to be stuck with a pistols grip?

Easy to change the stock.
Magpul for a modern twist( might not fit the heatsheild) or Speedfeed, Hogue or you could even find a wood stock for it...... :)
You could probably get a used Mossberg plastic stock pretty cheap as well.

I like the Hogue rubber overmolded foreends best.
