Anyone know when (and reason) Mossberg changed the front sling stud from bottom to front of end cap? Pic of 590A1 (51689) @ https://www.mossberg.com/product/590a1-class-iii-pump-action-6-shot-51689/ shows it at bottom.

Most likely, cost savings, one less step in manufacturing and since they already make the mag cap drilled and tapped, why not .
I see they do it to some 20 inch barreled 590's as well and recall a few 500's that had the sling stud on the barrel band and not the magazine screw , as is common now.

On the 14 inch barrel, I don't think it makes much difference, but its definitely noticeable slinging a 20 inch barreled one.

If you're looking for other options, GG&G make a nice forward sling point that fits under the mag cap , for push button base, sling strap or a h&k type hook , the magpul para clip will work with the last one .

Thanks for the info. Might check that out. When I looked at the pic at Mossberg's site, it was at the bottom, and pics at dealer sites here show at the bottom as well... so that was kinda what I expected when I ordered. IMO, it looks a little better as well. My last one was at bottom of bbl band...

FWIW, either you or your smith can drill and tap the band and install a generic stud. Not a difficult thing to do if it bothers you.
