I was looking to get myself a Mossberg 590a1 Blackwater edition shotgun, but unfortunately, it's a pretty damned elusive model to locate these days so I was considering just a regular 590a1 (model 51663) which is more readily available. The issue is that the 51663 model does not have a picatinny rail like the Blackwater and the ghost ring sight is mounted directly to the receiver. I had a few questions.

1. Has anyone added a picatinny rail to their 590?
2. After adding the rail can you still use the stock ghost ring sight?
3. If it still works, does it throw the stock ghost ring sight out of whack (off zero)?

Any help would be appreciated.

Post a WTB for a BW 590a1 if you want one. They're out there and many have only a few rounds thru them and sitting in the cabinet collecting dust (like mine).
That said, they are very nice SG's and the rails are great for accessories(if you're into that...I'm not).
Sorry I couldn't help out but it seems like a lot of work and $$ to get the 51663 set up like a BW.

I have a regular plain jane 590 up for sale right now. Not the A1 model but its priced to sell.

You can mount a rail to the regular 590s and use an optic. Doing so will not allow the use of the ghost ring sights since the rail is too high. I briefly ran my shotgun with an optical sight.

The ghost ring sight can be removed, you'd probably want some grub screws to fill the receiver holes though

johNTO, was just planning on adding a picatinny rail so I can mount an optic, but didn't want to loose the ghost ring.

Onagoth, thanks for the heads up. That's one of the reasons I was looking at the Blackwater, the rail is already added with the front sights already adjusted for the height difference.

Have you tried finding a 590A1 SPX? It has GR sights and a rail.

By the way, having tried what you are suggesting, putting an optic on a 590A1... Tried that a long time ago, found that the GR sights just work best.
