ok ladies and gents we're having a conundrum. we've got two camps, each arguing that their style of gun is better. they look basically the same to our inexperienced eyes, and of course, each gun can be modified to an nth degree. i've shot the remington, the hubby's shot the mossburg and we're sharing this purchase...it's apples being compared to oranges because we're never out shooting together :p (someone's gotta be with the rodents)

has anyone out there handled and/or owns BOTH a mossburg and a remington? i'm looking for pros and cons of each, and what your favourite is between the two.

i figure it couldn't be a bad purchase decision either way, not for our purposes. (said purposes being shooting random targets and clays, and the off chance of shooting something that moves)

thanks for the opinions! ps - did i mention we're wanting to buy it tomorrow? :D

Which Remington? the thousand dollar Police/Military or the least expensive model or the middle of the road Wingmaster. You can google the 870 action and find out all the differences between the models. For the money the Mossberg I think is the best bang for the buck. That said the Police/Military Remington is a fantastic shotgun. Which ever fits you best is the one you'll like the most. Being frugal, I'd buy a 1980's Wingmaster or two for cheap and build it/them up. Multiple barrels/stocks lend to whatever your feeling like doing.

I own both. As a hunting shotgun, I don't think it really matters. Both will work just fine. I use an 870 as a turkey and deer gun. I used to use an 870 as a tactical/3-gun shottie as well, but now use a 590A1. I don't like mag tubes projecting beyond the end of the barrel, and the 20" Mossy gives me 1 extra shell (8+1). I also find the Mossy a bit easier to reload, since I don't have that lifter in the way. Unfortunately this comes at the expense of weight, since I find the Mossy to be heavier. YMMV

My preference is the Mossberg 590. I like the way the elevator stays up keeping the loading port obstruction free, and the action release and the safety are better positioned, in that you don't have to break your firing grip to operate them.

That being said, if you plan to accessorize your shotgun, the Remington 870 has much more aftermarket stuff available for it, from barrels, to stocks, to sidesaddles, to weapon lights, to sling plates, to chassis systems, to magazine extensions. You probably don't need much more than a sling and perhaps a flashlight for your new gun, but some folks like to dress them up.

One thing to consider is that both guns come with a long (IMHO too long) stock, and if the stock is too long for you, you will feel more recoil. If you can, prior to the purchase of your gun, pick one up with a full sized stock then pick one up with a youth length stock and see which fits you better, particularly if the gun is to be used when wearing bulky winter clothing. Most adults can do well with a 13"-13.5" LOP, but the standard stock length on these guns crowds and in some cases exceeds 14".

They do feel different.
Mossberg's have a bit of a longer reach to the trigger due to the location of the action release.
As Boomer said the Mossberg has better control layout when using a standard stock but if you decide to put a stock on with a vertical style pistol grip like a Knoxx Specop for example then the control layout is worse then the Remington.
You both need to try them out for feel and go from there......or just buy one of each!

With a traditional stock I will give the 590 as the winner as the controls are better placed. If you want to put a pistol grip on it or recoiling stock, then the 870 wins.

I shot both. I would go with Mossy. I am a woman and I like shorter pump travel on Mossy (I do not reach comfortably with Rem). I like a safety and action release placement on Mossy, hands down. I shot buckshot and slugs with both - Mossy kicks less. If you do decide to go with Rem - at least go with a police model (870P Max) and put a collapsible stock with recoil buffer on it or you will stop shooting Rem fairly quickly. Who wants to have a blue shoulder, lol! With Mossy I went through 4 boxes of slugs in one day with not problem with off the box stock and didn't have sore shoulder.
