Does anyone know if the Mossberg 715 .22 LR is a decent firearm? The reviews are ALL over the place, some people say its a great tactical .22 for the price and a lot of fun to shoot. Many other reviews talk about constant jams... is the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 a better option? Problem is this is a restricted firearm, while I do have my RPAL, Im not a member of a range, so technically I wont be able to shoot it. I m a bit of a noob still, I only have an SKS and a 1911 handgun that I got in a combo pack, I have yet to even shoot the handgun, I can drop into a range to shoot the SKS but not the handgun bc of ATT issues, anyway... Im finding I want a cheaper rifle to shoot for fun...I suppose these collections multiply fast...

On a side note can someone explain to me why the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 is restricted? How is it any different from the Mossy? They are both long rifle .22s? What, so the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 is better quality and looks meaner, so its restricted? THey shoot the same ammo, they are bot long guns, they hold the same amount of ammo... I don't get it.

Well I see this has been talked about a lot on this thread... again some ppl say its a load of crap and some ppl say its a decent buy...

My wife has a Mossberg 715 and we are quite happy with it. We have 2 25 rd mags but can only load them to 20 rds as it is very difficult to get the rounds in the mag. I have heard that filling the magazines and leaving them for awhile helps, but haven't tried it yet. Other than the mags it has been reliable. I don't like the magazine release as the mags do not drop out freely. This could be a factor if you want to shoot rimfire class in 3 gun or something similar. To fully clean the Mossberg you have to remove several screws and remove the clam shell body from the rifle mechanism. I don't strip the rifle for cleaning, I wipe out the chamber area and pull through the bore with a bore snake. The 715 looks like an AR-15 in appearance but functions completely different, the safety, mag release, cocking handle are different.

Pros - price, non-restricted, lots of rail room for add ons, spare mags are readily available
Cons - mags can be problematic

I have the Smith and Wesson MP15-22 and I love it. It has proven to be totally reliable. The controls are the same as the AR-15 which is why I choose it. The only thing missing is dust cover on the chamber. The magazines drop out freely. I have my .22 set up the same as my DDM4V5 so the .22 is a cheaper training option. A big draw back for the S&W is the magazine restriction, since tere is a S&W MP15-22 pistol so the magazines are pinned to 10 rds.

Pros - reliability, mirrors the AR-15 in function, lots of rail room for add ons
Cons - cost (about $200 more than the 715), restricted, magazines limited to 10rds, spare magazines are very difficult to find

No. The reason it is restricted is because our betters have decided that it is an AR-15 variant. The handgun version; which was a flop and as far as I know, never made it into Canada, is the reason for the mere 10 round capacity. Again, our betters have decided that all M&P15-22 mags are therefore pistol mags.

So the reason why the mp15 is restricted is because you can use its mags in a handgun?

If i am not mistaken the mp15-22 is based of the AR and that is why its restricted. The 715 is a traditional semi auto in a badass looking clam shell.

I am one of the ones who has a bad experience with the mossberg... In fact mine just got back from a warranty trip that started in march. I am going to test it make sure it works then sell it. I already caved and bought an sr22... Tactical rimfire itch = scratched

the S&W is an AR varient, even if the uppers are not exchangable they made it restricted, so its restricted vs. non restricted... or you could get a ruger 10/22 with an AR style stock...
