Mossberg 715T Issue

Hey, I'm new to this site and also new to guns.... I want to make it clear that I don't know everything or pretend to.

Since acquiring my restricted/non restricted license the first firearm I decided to buy is the Mossberg 715T. For me it was a cheap gun that looked cool and I thought it would be a good starter. After purchasing the gun and reading a bit in the manual I discovered that the gun should be cleaned before being shot due to the thick lubricant from the factory. So I did some homework and found the MPRO 7 to be "the best" stuff out there. I purchased a cleaning kit from them and disassembled my gun, cleaned it, oiled it and put it away.

This past weekend I went out to fire my rifle for the first time. I used CCI Tactical .22 ammo(what I was told is the best ammo for .22 semi auto). I was able to fire off 4 mags(100 rnds) with no problems. But into my 5th mag the gun would load fine, first shot would fire and eject the cartridge but the next bullet wouldn't load up properly causing the firing pin to hit the side of the bullet and jam. I unloaded and reloaded several times repeating the same, first shot no problem second "click" and jammed.

Being new to all of this I am unsure how to troubleshoot this issue. First thing comes to mind is perhaps I didn't layer on the oil thick enough when I cleaned the rifle? Any tips or suggestions?

Thanks.

When you loaded your magazines, was there any sticky spots?

Some of the 715's magazine have burrs inside the magazine and the round follower will randomly skip there and cause this problem.

Also the manual for the gun says to avoid moving the magazine around inside the firearms as it will cause feeding problems like you described.

Grasping mag as a grip, resting magazine on table/ect using it as a monopod cause same problems.

Buy a bunch of small packs of 22LR ammunition and see what the rifle likes most, they all differ a bit.

Any other questions feel free to ask in here.

Thanks for your response...

Actually while loading the magazine it was difficult at some points to push the next round into place. I just don't understand why it would have worked fine for the first 4 mags. Is there any way of fixing that problem by filling the burrs off or something?

I have a fore grip on my rifle with a bipod the pops out of it and that is what I was using to hold/rest the rifle.

And as for the ammo I will take your advice and try a couple others just to see the difference.

Hi, RTPanther!

I also have a 715t and I use Federal ammo, I never had this issue with my gun.
But I've read about issues like it, try to give the feeding ramp a good clean and check for rough spots.
Some ammo, can be very dirty and gum up the action. I'm not saying CCI ammo is dirty ammo.
Open the bolt and lock it, and give it a good clean with a little oil and a small toothbrush.
All of these things can be done at the range, if needed.
And I also agree with Gove, he has very good pointers. Look up YouTube about the hokey tape to make the mag fit a little tighter.
I also did this mod to my mag, YouTube is your friend and there is lots of info about issues with the 715t.
Good luck!

Regards, Der Hauptgefreite

I've owned both the carry handle and flat top version. I found that almost no oil works best with the mossy. I found that the more oil there is, the faster the gun would get dirty and jam or accuracy would be effected.
Have fun and enjoy you mag while you can, it will be prohibated soon just like the bx25/m&p15-22 mags.
I had 7 715t mags and using the loader was the best way to avoid mag issues I found.
The screws and cleaning finally did me in and I upgraded to a SU-22 and a highly moded 10/22.

The mags have a bit of a break in period. Once you get some use out of them, it should get better. Ditto on not touching the mag while you are shooting.

It was my first rifle too, it is cool and I love it.

I'm reminded of the great Smith & Wesson add from years past: Thicker is better for burgers and shakes.

Always try to be as minimalist with lube as possible. Car engines need their internals to get a steady flow of oil but your gun doesn't.

The main thing that occurs to me is that after an hour outdoors your gun could be getting cold enough or wet enough that it's getting sticky. 22's in general are dirtier than centerfire guns, + a touch to much lube, + getting cold, could explain your problems.

Overall don't worry about it yet. New guns need a bit of time to work themselves in, and you need a bit of time to get familiar with their likes and dislikes. If it's still happening after 750 or so rounds then it might need to be tweaked just a touch.

I have the same gun and went through the same issues. I personally use Remington Viper ammo in my gsg 1911 and my mossberg 715t. Works great. Also dont use alot of lube on the gun. Gets dirty quicker and causes issues. Last thing. Which is the most important. Load and unload your mags a bunch of times at home. I did that after getting issues and now my gun is fine. Last thing. Smack the mag if it doesnt feed right. Ive found with any issues the mag springs were too weak to push up the rounds if they even got slightly suck.

Load your mags and leave them loaded for a week or so. Also experiment with different types of ammo and see what it likes to eat. Lucky for me mine loves federal bulk and cheap peters ammo. Every 715 seems to be different. After about 500 rounds or so it will get better. Mine was absolute garbage out of the box but since break in and the mag settle it an absolute blast! Im averaging 1 or 2 jams in 200 rounds now which is very acceptable. My buddies have a 10/22 and a 597 and it has as many issues as my mossy which is normal.

I have a Flat top and it was jamming right out of the box it went back for warranty work twice. works great now 1 jam out of 100 rds. my issue was a cracked buffer block (plastic).

I have some of the same issues, going through them and it will be a process to get through. Mine hates the a Federal bulk packs, jam up after 4 or 5 rounds. Going to stay with the CCI's, funny, jam up after jam up with the Federal's, borrowed some Stingers from a friend, 25 rounds no problem... Sucks, they cost more. Maybe I'll put the Federals aside and buy a .22 hand guns for them down the road. It's my excuses for another gun, shhh don't tell he wife.

I bought a 715 and the main problem was loading the mags. Surfing the net, a lot of people recommended taking apart the magazines and clean up the rough edges on the follower with a light sanding. I did this and then left the mags fully loaded for a couple of days. This seemed to cure and mag issues. The only problem we have now is when a guest shooter rests the mag on the bench, this jams it up.

Wow so your using bulk ammo for a semi auto?! I didn't think they were powerful enough to eject properly, or so I've been told by others?

yep as long as its high velocity its fine. mine eats up federal 525 blue box, peters high velocity(remingting) and american eagle is hit and miss

I went out to the range with it today, I fired 5 mags and it seemed to be working a lot better it only jammed up twice so quite an improvement. Starting to think it may just be a break in period? I was shooting 25 yards with iron sights and firing quite rapidly and my grouping was actually impressive all within a 3" radius.

Is it possible that the wax on the CCI Tactical ammo and the cold weather could affect the performance as well?
