Mossberg 930 waterfowl/rifled deer barrel dropping live shells

I bought this gun new and since day one it will occasionally drop the shell it is supposed to load out the bottom. The bolt will be closed, the action not cocked, and a live shell sitting at my feet. This has happened with everything from light target loads to goose loads, and even with the deer barrel using Winchester sabot slugs, so I can rule out a barrel problem.

Mossberg sent me a new shell stop assembly which I have installed but have yet to try. Since the problem doesn't always happen I have checked for any ridge at the mag tube/shell stop area, thoroughly disassembled and cleaned and lubed the entire firearm, including removed and cleaned the gas piston and rings. Does anyone have any other suggestions, I will take it out with target loads next month, but sometimes it will fire 4 boxes no problem, then mess up a month later.

I will send it in to Mossberg if needed, but I want to try and rule out anything that I can take care of myself before going that route.

Thanks!

methinks the only thing that could kick out a live round (absent any manual racking) is the shell stop.

The shell stop is actuated at a certain point when the bolt recoils. Try loading up the tube and manually cycling rounds to see if any come out of the magazine tube when you do.

With the new shell stop assembly installed it cycles much better by hand and took it out yesterday. Put 25 light target loads through it in on a very cold day and it performed beautifully, better than new. The new shell stop assembly was a complete assembly and the 'hook" that keeps them in the tube was better finished than the original shell stop.

Update fixed!!

I finally fixed my mossberg 930. I ran 100 7.8 and 8.0 shot through it today and it worked flawlessly. I had taken it in to the local gunsmith who popped the trigger group and and told me to lube it, and use compressed air to blow gun oil in to every nook and cranny of the trigger group. He also told me to lube the bolt and all other internal workings save the firing pin channel very liberally with a light gun oil, preferably spray, so I used Remoil. I had been using brake clean to clean it and he told me it tends to do too good a job, removing any trace of oil and leaving the metal very dry. I did as he said and he was absolutely correct. It is now working fantastic, couldn't be happier.

:D
