Mossberg ATR .270 Win or 30.06?

I'm looking to purchase one of these, but don't know what caliber would be better. I'm looking for an all-purpose rifle to help me get experience long-range shooting, and tide me over until I can buy or build a dedicated target rifle.

The ATR fits right in my price range: But it comes in 30.06 and .270 only. I can't tell which is more suitable. Are there any advantages to the .270, or does the 30.06 do better - does it use the same bullets as .308?

"...all-purpose rifle..." That means a lot of things. Target shooting or hunting? Reloader? That matters. Find something in .308 within your budget. The .270 is a great hunting cartridge, but a target cartridge it ain't. The .30-06 is a dandy cartridge too, but the .308 beats it for accuracy.
The Mossberg 100 ATR, short action, comes in .308 with a proper 22" barrel. That'll do nicely for everything with 165 grain hunting bullets and 168 grain match bullets and IMR4064 for both.
Mind you, the Mossberg is a hunting rifle. Not a target rifle. That may or may not matter, according to your intended primary use.

The .270 is a necked down .30-06.
The .270 is good to 300 yards for all game up to Elk with the right bullets.

The .30-06 ballistics are almost identical to the .308. There is nothing a .308 can do the .30-06 can't as well.

No reason you shouldn't be able to shoot around MOA or under with a good .30-06 at medium to medium long range. 300-600 yards.

Are you choosing the calibres because of the rifle, or the rifle because of the calibres?

I would tend to suggest you would be more likely to find a better all-round gun in Savage or Remington. Both have 308's which can be a fine cartridge for hunting and targets, and both are great platforms on which to build custom guns later. Both can be gotten for well under a grand.

ok thanks, under further consideration the 30.06 looks best. I don't want to customize anything, because I've got parts for a gunsmith class to do that nrxt year.
