Mossberg Dissapointment

So, i went and picked up the Model 500 field combo last week, and when i get home, to my suprise, i noticed the slug barrel appears slightly out of round, and the choke tubes in the box are 20 ga, but the gun is 12. I took it back to Canadian tire, where he went and pulled a few more barrels out of his stock and told me to choose. None appeared any different than the one i was given, so i picked the one that had appeared to be the best. He then swapped me chokes, and we mused at how the gun must have been packaged on a Friday.

Fast forward to today, i take her to the range and feed her 15 2 3/4" slugs to get the sights tuned, then a couple 3" to confirm. No issues with the barrel, all is good. I then let my brother pound away with about 50 of the cheapo winchester 7 1/2 shot shells, just to "break in" the new action, no worries there, then it turned sour. I loaded her up with Federal 3" 00 buck loads, to teach little bro about recoil, and imagine my surprise when the empties wouldnt eject. It seems they are too long for the ejection port. I double and triple checked, and the gun is indeed a 3" chamber, and the shells are indeed 3" shells, so what the hell is going on? Could it be possible that Mossberg cut the ejection port too small on only my gun, or that they perhaps had an old 2-3/4" reciever kicking around that made it to the production line and was stamped 3". I havent tried any other, aside from the federal buckshot loads, but all 5 from that box did the same thing.

Anyone else having similar difficulties, and how would you guys reccomend i handle this?

try with another brand of 3'' shell. My friend purchased a 870 that hated 870 fiochi shells, any others and it performed perfect.

I found that the Mossys were picky with the shells. Any I had loved the shells with lots of brass. The old Imperial shells were cash for the Mossys I owned

problem is that i have 3 boxes of black cloud that i have learned do the same thing about 75 % of the time. I dont really feel i should just forget about the $75 worth of shells i have on hand and spend another $75 just to find the right fit with a shotgun that i bought to handle 3" loads. :runaway:

Should a shotgun chambered for 3" not handle all commonly available 3" loads?

Ok, just talked to Keith Long, the warranty guy in Canada. He suggested i check the port length against a few more 500's to see if that is the problem, and then to ship it out to him. Can a couple guys with 500 12 ga. mossy's help me out and throw a Mic on your ejection port for length, it would be helpful. Mine measures 2.884"

Thanks.

That slug barrel definitely looks out of round. I don't know if its just an illusion but I would get a gunsmith to look at it. Hows the accuracy? I cant see a deformed barrel shooting too consistently.

I think that's a mental illusion due to the barrel resting on the plane of the table.

OP: take some measurements with a caliper, then report.

I had a similar issue with a semi. The empty hull wouldn't clear the chamber. I was initially concerned that the ejector was placed incorrectly or that there was some catastrophic flaw in the manufacture. It turned out that the empty hull of the particular brand I was using was about 1/8" longer than another brand's hull that functioned fine (both were 3 1/2" loads). I was relieved and am happily back to using my shotgun.

So measure your hulls side by side and see if there's a difference. Hope this helps.

ive never had a 'new' mossberg, but have owned 3 or 4 model 500's over the years.

once i had one chambered 2 3/4'' only and the other was a 3''. both had the EXACT same action, ejection ports measured exectly the same too. only difference was how the barrel was chambered. so unless thats been changed by mossberg in the last few years, i doubt its the lenght of the ejection port. maybe try a different brand of shells?

At this point, I would not spend too much time complaining to CGN. I would take the gun back to Canadian Tire and ask for a full refund. A fellow by the name of James is the gun manager. If he does not give you satisfaction, the store owner is Allan Dand. You are right that if the gun is designed for 3 inch and you have spent a bunch on 3 inch ammo you should not be required to invest more to learn of the gun's finicky taste.

PS No comment on that out of round thing, because after all it is a Mossberg. If I was to guess I would say that it is the ejector and not the extractor that is out of wack.
