Anyone know what Mossberg used for a finish on their older models (1940-1960). I have a couple of stocks to redo and I would like to be as close to original as I can.

It depends on the model. Mossberg used a few different finishes over the years. Some were stained with a reddish tint and oiled, others had a type of varnish put over them. You almost need to be model specific. I know over on rimfire central, Mossberg finishes comes up quite often for discussion. You might want to check with the guys over there on the Mossberg forum. They will tell you all you want to know about the older Mossbergs.

Thanks for the help and direction guys. I will definitely check out Rimfire Central.

I also like to work with Tru Oil but find it way to shiny for most applications and haven't mastered dulling the sheen down yet. It isn't the correct sheen for the Mossberg's for sure. It has to be one of the easiest finishes to apply that I've ever used and I've refinished a pile of stocks.
Thanks again.
