Mossberg Marinecote vs parkerized for truck gun

I have a Savage mk2 that stays basically all year long under the backseat of my pick up truck.

It gets full of rust spots in the winter because of the truck getting warm when I use it then getting very cold when I don’t…

I am very much set on getting a Mossberg 590 mariner (marinecote finish) OR a 590A1 with the parkerized finish.

I’ve tried searching on google which shows me lots of discussions about this on American forums, but I feel like most of them don’t really know what real winters are like. Most of them state that if you are never near any sal####er that the Marinecote is useless. I also read that a parkerized finish will rust if it’s not always kept well coated in oil… I don’t plan on continuously recoating my truck gun if that’s possible.

I’m tempted to go with a 590A1 SPX because of the xs night sights and the better sights overall and the Picatinny rail. But if it comes with hassles like having to continuously recoating it then I can do without all the bells and whistles and I’ll just go with the Mariner.

Marinecoat would be great and the parkerized wont rust if you rub grease on it. The parkerized finish will hold grease for long time. You dont need a thick coat of grease, just rub a tiny tiny amount to penetrate the finish. Using grease on the parker last longer than oil between recoating. I personnally prefer parkerized and manys years ago, i had a 590 mariner but i prefer the more discret look of the paker finish.
 
Guns getting warm and freezing over and over is rust nightmare for any gun. Winter SOPs is to just leave the guns outside. Best solution is to leave it where its not going to get warm, or i'm thinking an airtight container with desiccant. If there's no humidity its not gonna sweat.
 
Use a heat gun or hairdryer to warm up the parkerized gun and rub on a thin layer of grease on, let it cool and wipe the excess off with a soft cloth. It won’t rust now, worked for matte blued guns like the 870 express as well. It’s like seasoning a cast iron pan.
 
Not much to add to the comments above. Parkerizing is very conducive to using/holding penetrating oils/greases/films. Marine coats are pretty care free. Or products like Cerakote are good alternatives as well.
 
A former ETF guy once explained to me that the parkerized finish is designed to trap oil and provide excellent corrosion resistance, that's certainly been my experience with Mossbergs. I bought a used, parkerized "Persuader" model years ago and subsequently took it west with me as a companion gun while gopher shooting. Sure, I anchored some gophers with it of course (haha) but what sticks-out about that trip is that the gun was used for 5 days straight with sweaty hands and zero maintenance=zero change, or impact on the finish. None whatsoever.

More temperature extremes/worse weather? Can't say, but I'm amazed at how that very used gun was treated...and the thing practically looked better for the experience.

so you really want to upgrade from a 22 truck gun to a 12ga.

its not about finish. or you would get a SS 10-22 truck gun there is no issues.

I have a Mossberg 50012ga Marine coat. It fairs well in my car year round. Nice choice if you do not want to spend $1k on a 870.. the 500 was like $500

notice how I got to name drop 10-22 and 870.. just saying. Enjoy
 
Parkerized. Oil it and it will not rust. Snow, rain, condensation in a tent never caused an issue with any parkerized 590 I've owned. And I don't even bother to wipe moisture off or re oil it.
 
My marincote 500 has been holding up very well for years. Just a thought about the 590A1: the barrel is needlessly heavy. I moved mine down the road very quickly and went with a 500. I like that I can pop on a 26in barrel with chokes if I want to bust a few clays and swap it back to the 18.5'' barrel. Nothing wrong with the 590 other than it's rather hard to come by a hunting style barrel if you want a dual purpose shotgun. The plastic components of my 500 mariner have held up with no issue to use in unfavourable conditions. I can personally live without the metal trigger guard and safety and the magazine cap (vice nut) of the 590.

I had a 590a1 with the full 20 inch barrel that I sold because yeah it was really front heavy especially with 9 shells in the tube.
Recently got the 14" version and man the difference it makes, I absolutely love it.
I'm not aware of any other barrels that are compatible with that tube so it's true you won't be able to put a different barrel BUT a spare barrel is what? $200? You could buy a maverick 28" all purpose for less than $300.
IMO pump shotguns are cheap enough that you don't necessarily need a do it all. I understand this could be important to some people but... this is CGN... people here have collections worth more than my house

You guys were right. I have a Shockwave 14 inch that I’ve put a Magpul stock on it, as well as a 590 20 inch with a Magpul stock also and finally got a 590a1… annnndd it’s front heavy. Before buying I thought that I wouldn’t care because I’m tall and I train at the gym, but now I get what you guys meant hahaha
 
This feels like the '60s all over again but then it was video tape players not shotguns. The Beta was a better format and worked just great but the general populace went for the VHS. It ended up taking over.

Nowadays, it is the pump action shot guns. The Winchester SXP marine is a better gun but everyone is familiar with the 870 and that is the way it is. :(
