mossberg maverick 88 noise

hey guys, just picked myself up one of these today and when i got home i noticed when turning it up and down you hear something kind of rattle its way down the tube magazine.(it sounds like a spring).....I just wanted to know if this was normal or not as it is my first shotgun
 
Plug.
Remove the endcap on the tube (watch for spring ["you'll shoot your eye out kid"]
Remove the plug (will be wood or plastic)
Replace spring and endcap (in that order)
Shake gun and grin at the loss of the rattle
 
There is no endcap on 500's or 88's, turn the gun upside down after taking the barrel screw off with the barrel and SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE! until a 5/16" dowel falls out of the small hole.

Voila! Un-plugged, remember if you hunt to put it back in!
 
awesome!!! Thanks fellas, so much knowledge around here!....Im guessing that's in there to restrict ammo capacity for hunting?
 
Not an 88 owner but I'm wondering if a guy could replace it with say...an 870 plug that fits inside the spring so it wouldn't rattle when your out chasing Bambi or whatever you hunt. I don't think the springs internal diameters could be
all that different since they're both 12 gauges.

Correct.

Check your provincial regs (or ask here) before heading into the woods with it, but for target shooting and plinking there is no max on capacity on a pump shotgun.
Again check or ask before heading into the woods to shoot (even if you're not hunting) as some provinces presume that you are hunting if you are in the woods (or wilds etc) with a gun.

or just unscrew the mag tube!
its threaded, unlike the 870s that are soldered in.

make sure when you screw the mag tube back in it doesnt 'pinch' the follower inbetween the mag tube and the receiver.

alright.....i did a bunch of searching but couldnt find anything on that...do you happen to know for BC what the capacity is?

Good luck doing that with out pinching the mag tube and distorting it. You can't unscrew it by hand and I am pretty sure she is lock tited in there.

I can't get mine out by unscrewing it on my 500 or my 835.

the 500 mag tube unscrews for sure, pretty easily. mine wasnt loc-tited. try harder? righty tighty lefty loosey :D
never owned an 835 so cant comment on that.

the stock mossberg 500 follower i had (not sure if they are making different ones now) was a simple blued steel cup, and it had a bit of a rim that could be pinched inbetween the mag tube and receiver if you werent paying attention and screwed the mag tube back in without pushing the follower in a bit.
regardless its an easy process, and you should do it now and then - most mag tubes ive cleaned were full of rust and gunk.

My 500 is over 20 years old, I am a millwright... I understand lefty loosey.

With a strap wrench on it, it would not come out. It is in there and is not coming out.

Strange that yours wouldn't come off. The 5 or 6 new and old 500's that I have owned/cleaned have all been able to be stripped down. There must be some nasty rust or something strange going on.

I had this conversation with another guy who didn't believe me so I sent him some pictures of my 500 and 400g. Both stripped down to the receiver.

Can you see threads on the tube?

wow...

are you the first owner? maybe some dumbass glued it in? :(

or maybe an older model had a different design? (though i dont see how else they could have done it - the receiver is aluminum and the mag tube is steel, you cant exactly weld/braze it.)
