A local guy has a Mossberg Model 400 3-inch for sale for $250.

What do you think of this shotgun?

(I can't find a reference anywhere to a model 400. Maybe it's a typo in his ad)

I'm still favouring getting a new 870 Express for the synth stock and water resistant finish.

the 400 model were befor the 500 model and the 400 model i heard where made in Canada i never hear anything bad about them

The model 400g is essentially the "Canadian model 500". They were made in Lakefield, Ontario, and all parts, barrels, stocks, and accessories from the 500 will fit them. It most likely has a 30" barrel, with a fixed full choke.

My 400g has a little nicer wood than the 500 of today, but other than that they are the same gun. For almost the same money, I would just buy a new one, and get the screw-in chokes.

I bought a new 500 from SIR in Winnipeg last July, cost me $313 including tax and shipping. Comes with 3 choke tubes as well. For $63 difference you get a brand new gun, with a bit more versatility. As far as finish on a new model 500 vs a model 870 express, the Mossberg wins hands down, both in metal and in the wood finish. As far as synthetic stocks, I have no experience with either of them.

It does have a modified choke and is in "clean" conditon apparently, so $250 with no tax sounds pretty good.

Interchangeable chokes would be nice for clays though wouldn't they?

It's a Canadian made 500. Made in Lakefield, where Savage Arms are now.

Good guns. The wood was just a plain hardwood.

I've got 3 of them here now.

RePete.
