My Dad's old Mossberg bolt action used to shoot real straight but suddenly couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. When I look down the bore wigh a light there looks to be a partial obstruction 3 inches down from the breech. I cannot get my bore snake past this point and I tried to push an Otis cleaning brush but that will not go past either.

My question is, is the gun scrap metal? Is there a way to fix this that is not too expensive for an old gun?

It almost sounds like the barrel has an obstruction in it due to leading. That is, lead has been shaved off the bullet when it is travelling through the bore. Many times a rough spot in the bore due to rust or build up of unburned powder, or some other cause will cause this.

First of all, I would try some of the foaming bore cleaner -Wipe Out seems to work for me. Plug the breech end with a cleaning patch so that the bore cleaner does not run out of the barrel, and give it a good shot of the cleaner. Maybe keep an old rag wrapped around the barrel a few inches below the muzzle, so that when you spray the cleaner into the muzzle any excess will foam out the muzzle, and you can catch it with the rag. Let the barrel set overnight, then try to clean it.

It does help if you disassemble the action from the stock as this makes it a bit more handy to work with, and decreases the chance of getting the bore cleaner on the stock.

In the morning, try running a brass brush through the bore, then some patches. The brass brush will loosen the crud, and the patches will clean it out. This will work in most cases, but if it is really bad, then other measures may be called for.

If this does not work, then it is possible that the bore has been rusted inside.

You might have to take it to a Gunsmith.

It doesnt look rusted at all. The rest of the bore looks smooth except for the one spot. Is there a chance that the lining of the bore has cracked and peeled up? Is it more likely that it is lead fouling?
I will try the bore cleaner as I really have nothing to lose.

There is a scab of lead stuck to the barrel wall.

It started out as a rough spot, or smear, then started to build up.

If you have the ability to drive a close fitting brass rod piece through, it will knock the worst of it off, then the barrel will need to be well and properly cleaned, or it will build back up again. Even a close fitting aluminum cleaning rod, bumped against the lump with a hand.

I've pushed several such out of barrels. Some came loose as full diameter chunks of lead tube.

Not scrap at all. But cleaning it out is gonna take some effort.

Thanks trevj, I went at the bore with a brass rod and brush, lots of Hoppes 9 and I got it clean as a whistle!! It shoots straight as can be again!! Never could have imagined the lead that came out of that bore!!

Glad to hear that!

It's pretty amazing how much crap can build up in a barrel, without causing any actual damage.

The bullets squeeze past, and they don't fly so well.

As I said earlier, it only takes a little smear that sticks to the barrel to get it started, by the time it starts to effect accuracy at a level that a non-competitive shooter will notice, it can be pretty well along.

There is a whole industry around bore cleaners, for a pretty good reason.
